📣 📣 NEW COURSE DATE ANNOUNCED! I am very excited to partner with The Center for Appreciative Inquiry to deliver this new course - ACTIVATING CITIZEN-DRIVEN COMMUNITIES WITH APPRECIATIVE INQUIRY. Appreciative Inquiry’s inclusive design supports community development efforts by empowering citizens to identify its strengths, assets, and aspirations. Building upon their strengths, communities develop strategies that renew energy, cultivate hope, and inspire action for meaningful change. This course consists of four (4) virtual sessions that will provide key insights, learnings, and tools that you can apply in your community development work. Course kicks off: 17 June (weekly until 8 July 2024) if you are in the Western Hemisphere. 18 June (weekly until 9 July 2024) if in the Eastern Hemisphere. ⭐Strategy Spotlight⭐ This week, we’re highlighting how creating routes for residents to safely walk through neighborhoods have been shown to increase levels of social connectedness and reduce feelings of loneliness. Having routes to safely walk around one's neighborhood can increase residents' familiarity and trust in their neighborhood, resulting in greater community cohesion. Similar to the benefits of mixed-use, walkable neighborhoods, the short interactions that take place between residents on walks can eventually develop quality connections and inspire greater support of other residents. Cities across the country have created Safe Routes to Schools programs for children and their families to walk to school, safe from traffic, construction, and crime. Some neighborhoods in North Carolina, California, Vermont, and Georgia have implemented walking school buses, whereby "neighborhood captains" (parents, teachers, or even local business owners) collectively supervise the path children take to get to school. This coordination encourages communication and relationship building among neighbors, offers parents and children quality time to bond, and can provide busy parents with social support. And yet, we often get lost in irrelevant details when starting a new community. And ignore important pieces. We've built three communities from scratch. "You can’t be what you can’t see". A few weeks ago I had the chance to talk to Year 11 and Year 7 at a local school about offshore wind as a career. What we do? how you get there? what are the prospects? and the quantity and level of questions was brilliant. We don't build onshore wind farm in Surrey & Greater London so they'd never seen one but they were still very interested in Sustainability and Energy Transition. What it meant? The famous Net Zero we hear so much about in the news and the Energy Transition. How it works? Did we digress from offshore wind ? Yes... but we talked about how the future will change, hydrogen buses and aeroplanes, large scale infrastructure projects and I hope this sparked an interest for the Renewable industry. Providing care doesn’t have to be full-time; it can be providing a safe space for a young person for a couple of nights or one weekend each month.
