A few things to remember if impacted by a recent layoff. * Figure out what kind of separation this is. There are some important differences between being furloughed, laid off or permanently terminated and it could mean the difference between having healthcare coverage or not. * Write down your accomplishments and what you want to do next. * Get your layoff in writing from HR/Human Resources. * Collect or check on your final paycheck. * Ask about severance. I’ll teach you to how to negotiate for a better package, including being compensated for any unused vacation days. * File for unemployment. * Figure out your health insurance coverage. You can negotiate with HR to extend your benefits longer. I’ll show you how. * Ask your former manager for a reference and/or feedback, including writing a testimonial on LinkedIn.
