President and Chief Executive Officer at Hospice of Orange and Sullivan Counties, Inc. Radio Host - WTBQ “The Non-Profit Notebook” Sigma Theta Tau
I’m frequently asked if working in the hospice field is depressing or sad and frankly, there are times when there are moments of profound sorrow. Mostly, the moments of tremendous joy and fulfillment far surpass the emotionally draining ones. The rewards that come with seeing improved quality of life, bucket list fulfillment and honoring a patient’s wishes are bountiful. Every staff/patient interaction is unique but almost universally - hospices find a way to make sure that the death experience reflects the individual patient’s wishes. I’m inspired when I hear about the special moments that my staff facilitates when caring for patients and families. Those moments include sharing cherished recipes, photographs, and stories – whatever matters most to each individual patient and their loved ones. Dying is a part of life. Everyone dies. As hospice workers, we never get used to death ( a common misconception) – but we take great satisfaction in knowing that a peaceful death is really something to behold. That is precisely why we do everything in our power to reflect on what we can provide for those who trust us with their care and help make the months, weeks, and days easier to experience. Author Barbara Karnes teaches us that “dying is not a medical event but a social, communal one” Death doesn’t need to be viewed a defeat – especially when hospice is engaged to provide an extra layer of support as we say our goodbyes.
