Ever want to take a photo of the spectacular food cooking on a hot barbeque grill or the stars through an astronomical telescope, but end up with unwanted #distortions and #blurring? Dr. LAO DONG has set out to solve this problem to get you the crisp image. Lao will be presenting a #highlight paper at #cvpr2024 on #turbulence mitigation, a fundamental (and difficult) problem in #computationalimaging and #computervision . Existing work relies on the choice of a "lucky" image/template to register turbulent images. We showed that you don't necessarily need to choose and it is possible to register turbulent images to a template, but WITHOUT the template. The innovation comes from the assumption that the deformation (parameterized by a flow field) is zero-mean. It turns out that this flow field can be decomposed into flow from a reference to an intermediate key frame and from that to a target turbulent frame. This formulation allows one to compute the flow from a key frame to a target frame without explicitly having a template, which circumvents the need to choose. The caveat is that we need a flow inversion algorithm, which is our "secret sauce" (no pun intended). Results improve over existing methods and our base model is already the runner up of the #UG2+ #challenge at #cvpr2023. From a drivers point of view the purpose of the sand is more important than the conductivity.
Sand = safer braking in low-adhesion conditions. But too much of it can wreak havoc on the signalling system. We’re studying conductive sand alternatives that can maintain strong electrical contact at all times. More in the new Research Highlights: https://bit.ly/3S2ulia

A really cool article about how what might seem a simple concept was put to use ensuring a constant water flow to help fight fires in the 1700's. By pumping water into a chamber with air in it using a piston pump, the air would be compressed, once the flow of water into the chamber stopped the air would push the water out thereby ensuring a constant flow. https://lnkd.in/eRA4WQeJ
