Time to come together on B.C. forestry
Folks, there are THREE solutions that will fix the BC Forest Industry:
🔹 1. Remove the Old Growth Deferral Program
🔹 2. Approve Cutting Permits
🔹 3. Suspend any further changes to the BC Land Act.
Reasons why:
🔸 1. Old growth trees release more carbon (decay) than they process (CO2).
🔸 2. Permits should be approved 2 years in advance to harvesting.
🔸 3. Trees are renewable. Lodgepole pine seedlings from 2005 are now 1/2 way to maturity for harvest today.
🔸 4. Business needs certainty to have confidence to invest. Give them a stable BC Forest economy and they will stay and reinvest
🔸 5. Secondary remanufacturing of lumber can only happen if you have a healthy primary forest industry
🔸 6. Logging, sawmilling, pulp & paper, secondary manufacturing and transportation all rely on a each individual industry complementing the other. If one fails, they all fail
🔸 7. Every direct job in the BC Sawmilling & Pulp Industry creates 4-5 secondary jobs in the BC economy.
The BC Sawmill & Pulp industry used to account for 50% of the provinces GDP. If our BC Government doesn't have the experience, wisdom and knowledge to understand & IMPLEMENT these three simple solutions, are they really doing what's best for British Columbians?
