Living in urban environments has been associated with a significant 39% increase in the prevalence of mood disorders… While research shows a clear link between our built environment and mental well-being, there is still a lack of awareness among planners about how our designs affect us and our health. To this point, architectural practice is often based solely on intuition, neglecting existing evidence and data and leading to harmful consequences for our health. Being inevitably surrounded by the built environment, I believe it is important that we as architects recognize our responsibility for the health and well-being of the people inhabiting our designs. So, what's the solution? We need to intentionally design spaces with mental health in mind! This requires: 🌟 more research and education in architecture 🌟 bridging the gap between academia and practice  🌟 consideration of human behaviour and psychology 🌟 an interdisciplinary approach 🌟 collaborations with cognitive scientists, psychologists, neuroscientists 🌟 creating awareness Luckily, instead of solely harming us, the built environment can protect and even enhance our mental health if designed correctly. Is it possible to design the meaninglessness out of work?  Every building comes with a set of expectations. Students are quiet in a library, but loud on a playground. Adults are focused in their armchairs, yet chatty on bar stools. Witnessing how conventional building design could limit the choices of those inside, Jan Golembiewski began to leverage design psychology to improve the lives of different groups. From inmates in penitentiaries to the elderly within nursing homes, Jan uses salutogenic design to create spaces that prioritize health and overall flourishing for those within them. Jan is one of the world’s leading researchers in architectural design psychology. He is the director and nominated architect of the world leaders in the design of health facilities, the founder of Psychological Design , as well as the co-founder and CEO of Earthbuilt Technology. Jan is committed to understanding how the built environment impacts human health and well-being, conducting extensive research on the intersection of design and psychology. In this episode, Jan and I talk about the unique design approach called salutogenesis, which designs architecture and workplaces where people can not only survive but thrive. We also discuss balancing affordances and choices in design, narratives embedded in architecture, whether or not money-driven design affects livability, the effect spaces have on work, and other topics.
