Situated just a block away from the original location on 5th Avenue in East McKeesport, Pennsylvania's historic downtown shopping district, this project represents a resilient response to adversity. Following the unfortunate loss of the original building in a fire in 2021, the owners made a deliberate choice to rebuild on an adjacent property they owned. The new facility, spanning an impressive 7,500 square feet, has been thoughtfully crafted to support the nearly six-decade-old business and its promising future. This expansion not only reaffirms the commitment to retail development in East McKeesport but also pays homage to the historic commercial shopping district by prominently orienting the main entrance towards the street. An inviting staircase beckons visitors into the showroom, enhancing community cohesion and walkability. Furthermore, an accessible entrance along the building's side, adjacent to the parking lot, ensures a warm welcome to all patrons. Adhering to a contemporary architectural style, Lea's Floral Shop aims not only to propel the business forward but also to contribute to the borough's evolution in this new era. This has been an amazing project to watch come to life. As our planet grows warmer, the responsibility to design for shade becomes increasingly critical. At CannonDesign, we believe building owners, civic leaders and designers must collaborate to increase shade cover through creative approaches. Projects like our Kirkland Ranch Academy of Innovation, designed in partnership with Hepner Architects, is just north of Tampa, Florida. The project employs a minimum 2:1 ratio for shading full glazed walls. All other windows are covered with a perforated metal panel to provide shading and safety to the exterior. Simple things add!
