I recently had the opportunity to visit Dublin, and I couldn’t be more impressed. The last (and only!) time I was in the city was back in 2006. Fast forward to 2025, and it’s clear that Dublin has undergone a remarkable transformation. From being a charming European capital, it has evolved into a global hub for tech giants, attracting some of the world’s leading companies. This evolution is not just about corporate growth—it’s about how the city has facilitated this shift and reaped the benefits. The impact is evident everywhere: ✈️ A modern, bustling airport connecting Dublin to the world. 🚆 Improved transport infrastructure that makes getting around a breeze. 🍴 A thriving culinary scene with restaurants catering to diverse tastes. 🎭 Vibrant cultural and social events that draw in locals and visitors alike. 👥 A growing and diverse population bringing energy and dynamism to the city. What struck me most is how the right strategies—fostering innovation, attracting investment, and supporting growth—can truly transform a city. Dublin is a testament to how doing the right things, the right way, pays off in ways that benefit everyone. #Aberdeen - you’ve been wonderful! It has been brilliant to meet old friends and make new ones in the sparkling granite city. Here are some of my takeaways from the fantastic Joining the Dots Future Cities masterclass: 👉 Places are still the engines of the economy but they are on a journey to evolve. 👉 Increasing city residency and magnetism🧲 is vital. Places which have a mix of both residential and offices, like New York, have been faster to bounce back post pandemic. 👉 Your 15 minute city has to work, but so does your 35, 45 and 90 minute city in order to maximise economic impact. Are all your layers of time strong? ⌚ 👉 Cities need to stay relevant in addressing evolving urban challenges, not just socially and economically but how do they contribute in leading the way in sustainability. 👉 Successful places need everyone pulling together, a unifying purpose is critical for this. 👉 Residential needs to be viewed as part of the innovation economy - there has been a huge rise in the number of bedrooms which are places of business formation 🛏 👉 There is no shortage of public money for regeneration, but to access it cities need to engage with central government on a policy basis. 👉 Ports offer huge opportunities - they are places for sports, confluence, tourism and innovation and port cities can benefit from embracing them. 👉 Don’t dally! If you do nothing, or move too slowly, the circumstances around you will evolve, people will move on, and the initial objectives of plans may become less relevant. ⏳ Huge thanks to Harry O'Rahilly for the invitation - it was an incredible experience. Last week I had the pleasure of attending the Committee for Sydney's Parramatta Road Summit, an event that looked at the history, the future and the opportunity of one of Sydney's most-storied and now most-neglected corridors. 💭 I won't touch too much on what was discussed in detail, for that's done quite well by the summary here: https://lnkd.in/dU6dpc9t 📰 and by Elias Visontay's article in The Guardian here: https://lnkd.in/dFvgyvz4 However one thing I want to highlight is the scale of this project, using an incredibly rough and unreasonable comparison. 🚋 The area covered by the proposed Parramatta Rd Light Rail, connecting to Green Square to Burwood via Central, is wider than the Paris City Centre 🗼. Sydney is enormous, and connecting our centres is a mammoth task. Building one light rail project may not solve all of the issues in this part of town, but it will play a significant role in improving the economic trajectory of what should be Sydney's Champs Elysees (that's Parramatta Rd to be clear). 🥅 To take this further, I'm suggesting that Sydney, and more specifically, Parramatta Rd, should bid for the next available Olympics! If Paris can do it in a 10km space*, we can too! *I acknowledge the width of the corridors are quite different, but if anything that highlights the opportunity of the surrounding centres and neighbourhoods to economic growth off the back of a strong Parramatta Rd spine. And sure, Baron Haussmann had free reign over crafting Paris in the 1850s and 1860s, but there are some wonderful opportunities for development and community building in the area! One has to dream!
