At Intern, we're going to the Moon to harvest Helium 3 and bringing it back for use here on Earth. But if this is the first time you've ever heard of us, you're probably just wondering what is Helium 3 and how could it be so valuable that it's worth going all the way to the Moon and back? I get these questions a lot as a director of Business Development at Interlude, and so I thought I'd put together a video that helps give you a little bit more insight into what we're up to. Helium 3 is not the standard type of helium that you might be familiar with from balloons or MRI's. That is helium. Four, and it has two protons and two neutrons. By contrast, helium 3 just has one neutron, and this fact gives it some unusual properties, such as the ability to cool to the closest temperature to absolute zero and the ability to absorb neutrons into its nucleus very readily. It almost wants to become a helium 4. You could think about it that way. These properties make it central to some advanced technologies such as quantum computing, radiation portal monitors for weapons. Protection some medical imaging modalities, and in the future it has very strong potential for fusion energy. But despite how critical it is for these applications, helium 3 is in short supply. Its natural abundance on Earth is very low, and it's currently made inside nuclear reactors at a very, very high price by the US government. Since 2010, Congress has been aware of a shortage in helium 3, and the Department of Energy has been rationing it to all of these applications. It's in such demand now that the price is actually $20 million per kilogram. So it's the combination of these critical applications and the shortage of supply that makes helium 3 so valuable that it's the only resource that we could justify going all the way to the moon and back fall. I hope you found this explanation as compelling as I did when I first heard it and hope to be following up with some other super common questions that I've gotten in my tenure at Interlude.

I visited a quantum computing research lab last week... and they mentioned how costly 1 liter of Helium 3 STP was for their He-3 dilution refrigerator... so yeah, I get your business model now, especially if getting to a fraction above 0 deg Kelvin becomes the prevailing technology for quantum computing, there will be a big demand for He-3 🙂

Interesting post here on the state of LoRaWAN from The Things Conference. Afzal is saying that the elephant in the room is that the market isn’t growing. Now I’m not particularly well plugged into the LoRaWAN scene, but I do have some hot takes on why that might be the case! #1 - LoRaWAN has amazing range and power consumption, but it’s crippled by bandwidth and duty cycle limitations that make Over-the-Air firmware updates impractical / impossible. Anyone deploying connected devices at scale without OTA firmware support, in my opinion, is irresponsible and/or not good at their job. People who know what they’re doing, know that OTA update functionality is essential, and that’s preventing solutions from scaling. #2 - Many of the teams designing IoT devices for the LoRaWAN ecosystem don’t have a deep understanding of the industries they’re serving. Of course they have electronics / embedded software experience (and there are some excellent devices out there), but many of them are missing industry / systems integration / user experience / devops / enterprise security experience - and the result is poorly supported individual hardware widgets, rather than coherent systems. Again, that prevents solutions from scaling.
