Nuclear energy is in a similar place to the space industry before SpaceX. Cost-plus has permeated every line item, creating massive price distortions, so that any first-principles cost estimate looks wrong by a few orders of magnitude. Happy to be part of this exciting project published in PNAS Nexus, showing that preosteoblasts growing on curved surfaces change cell orientation from right-handed to left-handed while forming tissue-like 3D-cell layers. Thereby plywood-like structures are created. Following revelations early this year that American spies believe Russia is planning to park a nuclear weapon at the upper edge of low Earth orbit, efforts to somehow counter the threat to satellites have picked up steam. In this article published today in The Economist, I write about one such potential approach: ambitious initiatives to engineer systems that could flush out of orbit the satellite-harming energetic particles produced by high-altitude nuclear detonations, not to mention solar storms.
