Consider paying for your education first. Consider working for the Coast Guard, FEMA and other organizations that specialize in emergency preparedness, response and mitigation. Get in shape. First-responders have to be on top of their game mentally and physically. Identify a mentor for your journey. Having reputable professional references in your pocket strike a nice balance with educational and experience credentials. Get prepared at home with your family. The shoemakers' children should not go barefoot. FEMA offers a free Community Emergency Responder Team certification. Know what you are signing up for. Excelling within the practice is the best way to leadership.

A request! I'm gathering some training options for a group of Experts by Experience and interested to hear recommendations for: - governance training for EbE (inclusive and accessible options for training as a trustee - already aware of NCVO's options!) - research skills training (co-production research methods for EbE) - 'empowerment' training (public speaking, taking up space, identifying strengths and setting goals, compassionate leadership)

Y'all, let me tell you something..... I am living my best life! I've had the distinct honor to speak and teach at conferences over the last couple of weeks (#Safety24 and MAD SCCi), and next on the list is the Region VI - American Society of Safety Professionals PDC from September 18-20 in Virginia Beach, VA. I'll be teaching a 4-hour version of my "Leading with CARE Tactics" leadership development class at the pre-con and then giving a talk later in the week called "Use CARE Tactics, Not Scare Tactics: Refining Safety Through Science." In addition to the talks, I will be representing the ASSP Northern Virginia as a liaison, where I will introduce some speakers throughout the week. A little birdie told me some of my safety friends will be there, such as Pam Walaski, CSP, FASSP, Tim Page-Bottorff MS, CSP, CIT, Brandy Zadoorian, CSP, CSD, and Christina Roll, MS, CIH, CSP. I can't tell you how pumped about that! Also, I need to give a shoutout to another safety friend, Heather White, MIE, CPE, ASP, who will be teaching a pre-con on Manual Materials Handling: Risk Assessment and Solutions. If you don't know Heather, she is a LEGIT person and ergo-master! Let me know if you will be at the #RegionVIPDC #ProfessionalDevelopment #LearningTogether #CARETactics #ChangeChampions
