And still today we are faced in this country with what Dr. King described in 1966 as the most shocking and inhuman form of inequality. As defined by the CDC, health disparities are “preventable differences in the burden, disease, injury, violence, or in opportunities to achieve optimal health experienced by socially disadvantaged racial, ethnic, and other population groups and communities.” We have to do more. Employers can help. Even small actions can lead to meaningful change. Examples: 💡translate health benefits and educational material to languages that best represent your workforce 💡provide concierge support to employees to help them navigate their benefits, including finding (and setting appointments with) providers 💡bring mobile clinics and/or onsite health screenings to your employees’ communities 💡give employees access to health coaches who speak their language(s) 💡ask employees what health barriers exist for them and seek to take action if/where you can 💡create a “health advocate program” focused on engaging harder-to-reach employees in health/wellness activities
