🙏 Thank you to Hannover Fairs Australia for the opportunity to share Three Ways to Kickstart People Data Literacy across your Organization at the #hrtechfest in Sydney. Thank you Emma Weber for the generous introduction and supporting me through my presentation. 😊 It's been a wonderful two days of engaging conversations, making new connections, catching up with familiar faces, and learning from people like Kirk Docker and NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration CHCO Kelly Elliott. Main takeaways for me were: 💡Being aware of ways that I avoid answering questions I find difficult to answer, answering difficult questions myself first before I ask someone else, and to ask the right question to get an authentic answer. Kirk Docker reminds us that our interactions with people need to come from a place of love and in the end, we need to bring them back to a place of success so their life can be celebrated. 🚀 What am I leaving behind? Am I leaving something better than I found it? Kelly Elliott, CHCO of NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration shared her leadership lesson and it really struck a chord with me. After visiting the Kennedy Space Station earlier this year and meeting a real-life astronaut, I am still in awe of what they risk to go on missions and the high standard in which they are required to perform. The astronaut I met had to service the Hubble telescope! I am also aware of everybody involved in preparing for missions and ensuring that everything goes to plan. There was a time when the space industry used to be all about men until Sally Ride changed the course of history. In 1983, Sally Ride became the first American woman who fly on the Space Shuttle Challenger. Her historic journey has inspired generations of women to pursue careers in science and space exploration. In fact, as of 2023, nearly 30% of NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s active astronauts are women, leading missions and contributing to groundbreaking research. Let's see how women in the USA are changing the future of space science and encouraging young girls to follow in their footsteps. ✅ Astronaut Representation ~ As of 2024, 75 American women have flown in space, making up about 30% of all US astronauts. ~ NASA's 2021 astronaut class achieved gender parity for the first time, with 5 women and 5 men selected. ✅ Scientific Contributions ~ American women scientists have led groundbreaking space research missions: -Dr. @Nicky Fox heads NASA's Heliophysics Division, studying the Sun's impact on Earth. -Dr. @Kate Calvin serves as NASA's first Chief Scientist and Senior Climate Advisor. ✅ Commercial Space Involvement ~ gwynne Shotwell serves as President and COO of SpaceX. ~ Even the percentage of women earning aerospace engineering degrees has risen to 22% in recent years. ✅ Future Missions ~ NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration aims to land the first woman on the Moon by 2025 through the Artemis program. ~ Women astronauts are training for long-duration missions to Mars. Much like Christa McAuliffe, who believed fervently in the transformative power of education and the exploration of our world through the lens of technology, I share a profound commitment to fostering learning through the wonders of flight. In the pursuit of understanding our universe, education becomes the catalyst for growth and enlightenment. Christa McAuliffe's legacy serves as a reminder that educators play a pivotal role in inspiring the next generation to explore, question, and reach new heights. The Challenger Educator award symbolizes not only individual achievement but also the collective dedication to advancing knowledge and pushing the boundaries of what we know. Education, coupled with the omnipresence of technology in all aspects of our lives, creates a powerful synergy. I'm beginning a new passion project I am tentatively calling A Candle in the Dark, which is a reference to The Demon-Haunted World by Carl Sagan. This will be a long-term project aimed at increasing scientific literacy and building public trust in and support for the scientific method as a means for determining truth. This is something I'm going to be working on in my spare time, which is nearly non-existent, so it will be a slow process. I will post my thoughts and insights on this project as I complete the different stages of research, planning, implementation, and evaluation. Legend has it that when a NASA janitor was asked what he was doing, he replied, "I'm sending a man to the moon." At NASA, from the engineers designing rockets to the janitors sweeping the floors, everyone understood and embraced the overarching goal of landing a man on the moon. In today's world of rapid change and complexity, maintaining unity of vision is more critical than ever.
