As we look to the future of endless possibilities for women on International Women's Day we must also acknowledge the progress of women before us and how this has and will continue to influence our drive for equality and independence. My bucket list includes many things for me to achieve and experience, many have been crossed off; leaving some yet to get around to, and learning to fly is one of them (one day!). I have chosen to mark International Women's Day going back through history and came across the achievement of Jerrie Mock....Read on..... Just short (by days) of 60 years ago Jerrie Mock set off from Columbus on a flight around the world on 19 March 1964. Although it is reported that Jerrie was not intentionally competing against Joan Merriam Smith who had set off from San Francisco two days earlier, a competition developed between them as the media followed progress of their flights. Incidentally, Joan's flight path was the same as previously been attempted by Amelia Earhart who was the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean some 32 years earlier, and had achieved many firsts, but sadly Amelia disappeared in flight in 1937. Jerrie won the race and became the first woman to fly solo around the world. Today, with all the possibilities out there for the taking today, we may not view Jerrie's achievement as significant without we understand and appreciate that in the sixties, women were oppressed, and dominated much worse than today, in a man's world. I can only imagine how exhilarating such an achievement must have been during those times and how our imagination can also take us (Women) forward in challenging and achieving our aspirations - anything is possible! #internationalwomensday

Happy International Women’s Day! 👩 All around the world women are creating positive change not only within their families and local communities but also on a global scale. But this #internationalwomensday2024 we take pause to not only acknowledge the amazing contributions being made, but that everyone must come together to close the gap; small change, makes huge impact and one step at a time the gap will be closed. Together, let's honor their strength, wisdom, and achievements, amplifying their voices this month and beyond! Back in 1989, Rotary delegates made a historic decision to eliminate the RI Constitution requirement restricting Rotary Club membership to men. 🚀 The decision to admit women into Rotary clubs worldwide was not a spontaneous event but the result of decades-long efforts by dedicated men and women from every corner of the Rotary world. The response to this groundbreaking decision was nothing short of overwhelming. By June 1990, the number of female Rotarians had soared to over 20,000. Fast forward to July 2010, and women's membership worldwide reached 195,000, constituting about 16% of Rotarians. In July 2020, that number surpassed 277,000, making up approximately 23% of Rotary's global membership. Rotary's commitment to creating an environment where everyone is included and allowed to have a sense of belonging has become a top priority. The journey of women in Rotary is not just about membership numbers. It is about active participation and leadership. Women have increasingly taken on roles that contribute to their communities and assumed leadership positions within Rotary. Embracing change is at the core of Rotary's evolution. #internationalwomensday2024 #womenpowerr #WomensHistoryMonth2024 #rotaryclubofsarasota #Rotary #sarasotaflorida #empoweredwomen #WomenInRotary #rotaryinternational #RotaryZone34

This year, I am thrilled to be part of a meaningful conversation at the IMO's event celebrating the International Day for Women in Maritime, Highlighted by Arsenio Dominguez in the video below. This year's theme, "Safe Horizons: Women Shaping the Future of Maritime Safety," gives us the perfect platform to discuss blending human needs with technology, enhancing training, and boosting seafarer well-being. The symposium will take place on 17 May. 🔥 Fireside Chat: A Holistic Approach to Safety at Sea: I'm thrilled to join Dr. Momoko Kitada, Head of Maritime Education & Training at the World Maritime University. Momoko leads WMU’s collaboration efforts with the IMO in terms of women’s integration in the maritime sector, and actively incorporates gender perspectives in her interdisciplinary teaching in maritime subjects. In our chat, I'll draw from my journey as a seafarer, research projects such as OCEAN Navigation Awareness, my collaborative work in human-centered design and human factors, and my experience leading a team of designers in developing maritime technology. We're aiming for a deep and engaging conversation that challenges the status quo and drives us towards Maritime 5.0: a truly human-centered, resilient, and sustainable industry. In the long term, I hope this conversation sparks a broader dialogue about the holistic, goal-oriented integration of people supported by technology, which is a cornerstone for future and continuing safety and inclusivity. 👉 Stream the Discussion Live While in-person participation is limited to IMO delegates, I'm excited that the conversations and messages will extend this discussion globally via live stream. 📅 Date: 17 May 2024 🕝 Time: Starting at 2:30 p.m in London. 📍 Location: IMO Headquarters, London, and available globally via live stream on the IMO YouTube Channel. 🔗 Watch the live stream here https://lnkd.in/g8Epk3e4 Kongsberg Maritime #WomenInMaritime #WomenInMaritimeDay #MaritimeSafety #HumanCenteredDesign #TechnologyIntegration #IMOHQ #maritime5 #industry5

Cannot wait to have a positive, heart and eye opening discussion with these brilliant women of our cruise industry: Kate McCue Marie-Caroline Laurent Anne-Marie Spinosi And some numbers as I like supporting any matter with numbers ☺️ 🌊 📝 57% of women in maritime industry are employed by the cruise industry and this sense leads the way in providing equitable and meaningful career opportunities to women across the maritime sector. 🌊 📝 Of the 1.25 million seafarers worldwide, women make up just 2% – showing us there’s still plenty of room for growth in the cruise sector, and in the maritime industry as a whole. 🌊 📝 Female captains make up just under 3% of cruise ship captains worldwide though – but this number is slowly growing. This panel will evaluate the ways, tools and platforms we need as women to create to encourage young women to join the maritime and our vibrant cruise industry. #tarragonaport #64MedCruiseGA #portstogether #Inclusiveness

Happy International Women’s Day! Today I celebrate women! Women who inspire, empower, lead and disrupt the status quo. It also vitally important to recognise individuals who advocate and support equity and equality of women’s rights globally! I’m proud to work at such an inclusive empowering environment where women at all levels are empowered to inspire and lead. History has come along way in a 100 years but there is still a long way to go in improving and breaking down barriers on the global standard for equality, equity and inclusion for women. The global gender gap report index published by the world economic formum in 2022 showed areas for improvement include: Health and Survival 95.2% The five countries with gender gaps that were larger than 5% were India (93.7%), China (94.0%), Azerbaijan (94.1%), Pakistan (94.4%) and Qatar (94.7%) In comparison, the UK had closed 96.5% of its gender gap in this area, ranking 105th out of 146 countries Educational attainment 94.4% The index identified that 29 countries had reported full gender parity in educational attainment. In this area, the UK ranked 33rd (99.9%). Economic Partisipation and opportunity 60.3% The report also noted that 28 countries had closed less than 50% of the gender gap across this indicator, with the lowest levels of parity reported in Iran (16%), Afghanistan (18%) and Algeria (18%). The UK had closed 73.3% of the gender gap in this area, ranking 44th. Political Empowerment 22.0% The sub-index also had the widest range of dispersion amongst countries in the index, with Vanuatu having the lowest ranking (0%) and Iceland having the highest (87%). In addition to Iceland, 11 countries had closed more than 50% of their gap. This included New Zealand (66%), Germany (55%) and Ireland (50%). The UK had closed 42.3% of its gender gap in political empowerment, ranking 24th. I am thankful to live in a country where we have the right to education, access to health but there is still more to do on the gaps!
