Long-awaited proposed changes to the Australasian Joint Ore Reserves Committee (JORC) Code will see all ASX-listed minerals explorers and producers having to report more explicitly on how ESG factors are impacting/influencing their projects. Engaging with mining leaders at our recent round table event provided a platform to delve into PwC's latest "Aussie Mine" publication. The discussion was dynamic, covering critical topics such as: - The evolving sustainability reporting requirements and their impact on the industry. - Comparing the performance of capital investment into critical minerals juniors with other jurisdictions. - Addressing the burden of green and red tape on mining operations. - The necessity for a consistent message from the mining sector. - The need for mining to better support competing projects. - A thought-provoking challenge from the audience on whether the perception of mining has truly changed. Our 2024 Aussie Mine report highlights the current state of Australia's mid-tier 50 mining companies (MT50) and the critical alignment needed to navigate the decarbonisation landscape. Despite a significant drop in market sentiment for most critical minerals, the long-term demand remains strong, driven by the need for lower carbon technologies. The report underscores the substantial opportunity for Australia to generate significant GDP and job growth by 2040 if policy settings align with market needs. 🔎 Bridging the Mining Trust Gap: ESG Skills Needed to Drive Action CSIRO's latest report highlights that although #trust in the #mining industry has improved, ESG performance remains the big challenge with crucial progress: “Further improvement is contingent upon the industry's ability to address environmental concerns, engage with communities transparently, and ensure fair distribution of economic benefits." While 73% of respondents acknowledge critical minerals are essential for net-zero goals, 61% still say mining has negative environmental consequences.
