Speaker, Facilitator, & Consultant, & Speaker on Graduate Education or DEI | Author "20 Questions to Answer Before You Apply to Graduate School"
👋 Pursuing a graduate degree is an exciting journey but comes with challenges. I've been there whether you're eagerly awaiting admission updates, fine-tuning your application, or still weighing the decision. 🌟 Top 3 Reasons People Aren't Getting Into Graduate School: Subpar Academic Records: **Cumulative GPAs often fall below program requirements. **Missing prerequisites? It might hinder showcasing your expertise. Limited Research or Professional Experience: **Lack of research contributions can impact your chances. **Some programs seek 3-5 years of professional experience. Poor Application Materials: **Generic statements of purpose? Not the best idea. **Lackluster recommendation letters? They can make or break an application. I faced these challenges applying to a doctoral program at Oklahoma State University. But, addressing each concern led me to success at the University of Georgia for my doctoral degree. For #3, I became intentional about selecting recommenders. My recommenders for my UGA Doctoral Application were: **1 UGA alum respected in my field **1 respected Ph.D. in my field **1 Ed.D. familiar with my work as an instructor, professional, and researcher. Ready to overcome these challenges? Let's chat! Look, if you tear up your diploma while walking across the stage at graduation, there is no cause or purpose you can espouse that will make me think you are honorable or brave. In the best case, I will think you are an insincere, attention-seeking, follower who wants to impress their like-minded friends at the cost of others; just like a streaker or an idiot-on-the-field. In the worst case, I will think you are a sincerely petulant, impolite, and self-aggrandizing child because your tantrum distracted from the achievements and hard work of your classmates who deserved to have their accomplishments recognized too. Just like the other people who hire in your preferred field, I know that we didn't know a damned thing at college graduation - and you don't either. College merely demonstrates that you have the work ethic and life skills to show up on time, and complete assignments. We're not hiring you for your knowledge. We're hiring you for your character and judgment. This action evinces neither.

Senior Vice President for Student Success and Enrollment Management at Medgar Evers College of the City University of New York (CUNY)
My recent post about the value of student affairs professionals in campus leadership has resonated with many of my colleagues. It's great to see new, mid and senior level colleagues reacting to it, which tells me that many of you think or experience this at your institutions. Let me add a bit more context. As someone who has been in higher education for 28 years, I can attest that student affairs professionals bring a unique perspective to the table. Having worked in various roles, including entry level positions (housing, academic advising, etc.), director, dean, and vice president, I've had to learn different skills, such as academic and administrative policies, legal considerations, crisis and risk management, facilities management, budgeting and strategic planning - you name it! And I'm not alone. Many student affairs professionals can attest that the skills we learn to every facet of campus. Not only do we study these skills in our academic programs, but we live them every day. Why? Because we never know what student/staff/faculty issue may walk through our doors. And, we are ready! My point? Archaic thinking about campus leadership sometimes keeps student affairs professionals on the fringes. While other administrators are critically important, the perspectives of SA staff add an important consideration to all campus decisions - students! Aren’t they why we do what we do? So, my advice to campus leaders is to seek out the perspectives of your SA staff at every level. You will be amazed at what you gain. #StudentAffairs #HigherEducation #CampusLeadership #StudentSuccess
