IN CAHOOTS - INTERCONNECTIONS OF FIRE PROTECTION SYSTEMS WITH ANCILLARY EQUIPMENT | By Amy Anderson, P.E., CFEI Fire protection, suppression, and alarm systems often do not act alone. They can be in cahoots with life safety systems or other equipment or building systems to mitigate fires and help firefighters. Many, but not all, of these functions are associated with fire alarm systems. Many, but not all, of these functions are ... Just arrived at Swindon and I'm preparing the room ready for the candidates assessments tomorrow, this always starts with risk assessments, ELSA pre-use checks and correct harness wearing with checks for the right EN numbers. After that we will have an early coffee and then who ever hasn't been a top person yet will be given a task and asked to pick their team and the rest of their equipment. They will read the task and assign duties to their team, ensuring they know if any isolations are required. They will then complete their PTW and if necessary conduct a 'Bump Test' on their gas detector. They will then perform all of their access and fall arrest equipment pre-checks as well as monitoring the cover for gas. If after checking their High and Low peaks everything is OK they will lock off their isolations, Then the top person will radio base to ensure they have a good signal and check the weather prior to the task. Then the TP will connect to a PFL and and lift the manhole cover ensuring his team are out of the way but inside their cordoned off area. The TP will then conduct gas checks at various levels for the required times and record their Peak Highs and Lows. Upon conclusion of this they will know if they can simply get ready to enter, need to force ventilate or abandon due to adverse conditions. Assuming things are OK they will radio base and update them on what has been done so there is an accurate communications log and ask to enter. Whilst this doesn't lay out everything or cover that there are always problems with equipment or readings that require the correct paperwork or cessation of the task it give you a general idea of what we expect them to prove to verify their competence to work in such an industry. Then we will do it all again at least twice more so that every candidate has taken the role of every role that exists within the team. I don't know what paper they will be sitting tomorrow because it doesn't matter, if we've trained them correctly they will pass what ever paper they are given and be an asset on site. 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗣𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗹𝘆: ➡️ The system's main power should come from the building's primary electrical service, guaranteeing a steady power source under normal conditions. 𝟮. 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗣𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗹𝘆: ➡️ In the event of a primary power failure, a backup system such as batteries or an emergency generator must kick in automatically. This backup must support the system for at least 24 hours, followed by 5 minutes of alarm operation. 𝟯. 𝗗𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗖𝗶𝗿𝗰𝘂𝗶𝘁: ➡️ Power supplies must be connected to a dedicated circuit to prevent accidental shutdowns. Ensure that circuit breakers are clearly labeled and accessible only to authorized personnel. 𝟰. 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴: ➡️ The system should continuously monitor the status of power supplies and signal any failures to a supervising station. #FireSafety #NFPA72 #FireAlarm #BuildingSafety #EmergencyCommunication #FireProtection #SafetyStandards #Engineering #Compliance #LifeSafety NFPA Occupational Health & Safety Magazine Occupational Safety and Health Association --OSHAssociation NABTA FOR FIRE FIGHTING & ALARM SYSTEM LLC Fire Alarm Service Team, LLC Honeywell
