Every Guide Dog handler - and Guide Dog - is different. Part of building an effective team is finding the right dog for the client. Although a team working together can look like magic, we often don't see the communication and bond between a dog and their handler. The handler will direct the dog using their orientation skills, and the dog will help their handler navigate around obstacles, stop at kerbs and locate objectives. Some dogs are better at certain aspects of these "guiding skills" than others - so part of the matching process is understanding the dog's strengths and weaknesses and pairing them with a client with a complimentary skillset. The team works together to travel safely and confidently - it's not as magic as it appears! Consider donating to the IGDF to support Guide Dog organisations around the world: https://lnkd.in/ggzrXR7S Image Description: A Guide Dog handler prepares to board a bus with their black Labrador Guide Dog who is wearing a white harness. The handler, who also holds a long cane, has stopped at a patch of tactile indicators with their dog sitting beside them. Aboard their rowing boat the team had millions of calories worth of specially formulated dehydrated meals that would give them maximum calories. But for Rod, it was a simple pack of Tesco noodles that did it for him. 🍜 • A meal he referred to as 'pure heaven'. 😇 • And whilst we now need to go and recalibrate what heaven looks like - it does highlight an important point; food aboard the boat is really important from an energy perspective - but it's also really important from a psychological perspective. 🧠 • Sure, Tesco noodles are not as calorie dense as the other meals aboard - but it was a little bowl of happiness for Rod, and as he sat there, with his heavenly meal, watching the sun go down, with this three friends...that boat was a very happy place to be in deed. ☺️ • One of the reasons for sharing some of these insights is to remind everyone that the team are still raising money for Get A-Head Charitable Trust and Meningitis Now - if you enjoyed following the team and didn't have a chance to donate - now is the time! Yesterday was Adopt a Shelter Pet Day! Please consider ADOPTING a pet at your local shelter as the shelter crisis continues to overwhelm Texas shelters and rescues. If you can’t adopt, consider helping in the other ways that make a BIG impact on shelters, such as volunteering, fostering, or donating your time. 👉 Call your local shelter and see how to get involved! #AdoptDontShop

I'm in the final throws of finishing the new St Vincent's Resourcing website (watch out for my next post on this) which can get you in a very reflective mood, and part of the discussion internally recently was focussed on why, after all these years, we're still doing what we do. We'd been talking about an exercise we did a number of years ago when trying to learn more about our staff, everyone including leadership did a basic personality test and we shared the results. It did start out as a bit of fun, but it was really interesting, with some surprising results. One thing we did notice as a trend across the business was a particular category that stood out as most common - The Helper. As with all personality traits, being a helper is both a help and a hindrance, but we did have a bit of a collective realisation then that we were very much a business that likes to help. It was the reason (and still is) that I got out of bed in the morning, and was an ingrained part of our approach to how we worked with our candidates and clients. It was also at the centre of why we were so involved with charity work for so many years. We'd organised so many events in the aid of numerous charities close to our hearts but, for numerous reasons, not least our shift to a more remote working model, our efforts in this area have waned. We're doing what we can now to get that back on track, and, for the first time in a few years, we've got back involved! A few weeks ago we took to the Isle of Bute for a cycle in aid of 2 amazing charities (details below). This journey was ruff, but knowing it'll help provide care for dogs in need made it worth it. If you believe in wagging tails, slobbery kisses, and giving pups a new leash on life, throw us a bone by donating to our JustGiving page: https://lnkd.in/gXuuVxXj Every contribution, no matter how small, will help us raise the woof! Let's show these pups that humans can be a dog's best friend too. #CharityCycle #PawsomeCause #WhosARescuedWho
Reflecting on such an amazing day with some of our St. Vincent’s family! This time last month we were gearing up for a busy day cycling around Bute for amazing two amazing Charities; Mental Health Innovations (the creators of Shout) and Second Chance Dog Rescue 🙌 We’re proud to be making a difference with the money raised so far. Thank you to all who have donated! Check out our donations page here: https://lnkd.in/eQv7bq4t Here’s what we got up to on the day 👇 #MentalHealthInnovations #Shout #HealthcareIT #Fundraising #Charity #SecondChanceDogRescue

Partnering with ESG, CSR teams, B Corps, trusts, philanthropists and other organisations | social value | social impact | The Country Trust
What is life like as a charity fundraiser in 2024 ❓ 🎢 Well. Let me tell you. It's a wild ride. The non-profit landscape is tougher than ever. According to the latest Charity Commission annual report, there are 168,893 charities on the register for the year 2022-23. Many worthwhile causes requiring a lot of support. There are hoops to jump through out of your control: ❌your income is too high ❌your reach is too low ❌your beneficiaries are too young ❌your volunteer programme is too tricky ❌we love what you do but we've just partnered with Sally's mum's friend's dog rescue centre... But maybe it's the ex-teacher in me. This stuff NEVER puts me off. In fact, it makes me more determined than ever to make a difference for the children we serve. After a few weeks of hitting brick wall after brick wall, Monday brought the most unexpected, substantial donation from a wonderful supporter of The Country Trust ✅ Their words, "The work you do is imperative and we are delighted to support it." These words will fuel my fundraising tank with hope, optimism and belief through the next few months. So hang on in there. Enjoy the white knuckle ride. Keep the faith. #grateful #childrenswellbeing #food #farming #countryside #csr #esg #makeadifference #fundraisingsuccess #fundraisingtips #thecountrytrust

Did you know that if you have a pacemaker fitted, you can include it in your Will to be donated to a dog in need, after you pass away? Pacemakers cannot be used for another human, and are removed before cremation, but they can help dogs with heart problems and potentially save their lives. You can arrange for the pacemaker to be sent to a vet of your choice after passing. Many pacemakers are simply thrown away, and dogs may die because people do not know about this simple and worthwhile option. Donating a pacemaker can even save the dog's owner the cost of a new one, which can sometimes make a crucial difference in affording life-saving treatment, and the death of a beautiful pet.

10 minutes in to what was perhaps the longest, hardest journey of their lives, the team were absolutely powering away on the oars at 4.3 knots! 🏎️ • They didn't see 4.3 knots very often on their row - they also didn't see such good weather very often! 😬 • In the video we can see Fuerteventura in the background. The team headed down the east coast of this island, unlike the year before when the teams all headed down the west side of the island. This is a decision that is largely made for the teams by the weather. 🌬️ • One thing that didn't change throughout the race, was the team being absolutely on fire(!) - they were incredible from start to finish, in what was one of the toughest Atlantic seasons, weather-wise, in recent memory. 🌊 • One of the reasons for sharing some of these insights is to remind everyone that the team are still raising money for Get A-Head Charitable Trust and Meningitis Now - if you enjoyed following the team and didn't have a chance to donat - now is the time! If 96% of UK charities describe themselves as "small", is it time to start redefining what we mean by 'small charities'? Surely the term 'small charity' must bear some relation to the size of charities more broadly. You can't say a rhino is a small animal simply because it's much smaller than a blue whale. It would be absurd to say France is a small country because Canada is so much bigger. So why do we persist in considering charities with 20 salaried staff and a turnover of £1m a year "small". Your thoughts please! #NonProfitNetworking #SocialGood #CharityInnovation #NonProfitLeadership #CharityWorkshops
