Renal vascularization and innervation Very interesting lecture at #KidneyWeek by Dr Lori O’Brien (UNC Chapel Hill) on the vascularization and innervation of the developing kidney. Blood vessels and nerves invade the developing kidney alongside one another, a process that is driven by Netrin-1, which also dictates the patterning of renal vascularization and innervation. In the adult kidney, nerve endings can be seen wrapped around the glomeruli and tubules. In the absence of Netrin-1, renal blood vessels and nerves follow a completely random pattern, and surprisingly, the kidneys are more resistant to ischemia reperfusion injury than in wild type mice. This raises the interesting possibility that the metabolic adaptation of the kidney to the disruption of vasculature patterning, i.e, ectopic hypoxia, protects it from injury.

Researchers found that epithelia can trigger inflammation when apoptotic cells are not eliminated by apical extrusion. Apical extrusion prevents inflammation by physically eliminating apoptotic cells. This suggests that epithelia may be predisposed to inflammation if apical extrusion is compromised.
