According to SharedHope International’s Institute for Justice & Advocacy, from November 2021 through February 2022, Missouri received an average failing score on key issues including (1) criminal provisions; (2) Identification of and response to victims; (3) Continuum of care; (4) Access to justice for trafficking survivors; (5) Tools for victim-centered criminal justice response; and (6) Prevention and training. https://bit.ly/3RKRo1u Senate Bill 775, introduced by Holly Thompson Rehder and signed into law by Mike Parson on June 30, 2022, established the Statewide Council on Sex Trafficking and Sexual Exploitation of Children to collect data and develop best practices for response. The Council’s recent report and recommendations for action are important to follow in the upcoming legislative session. Our children are counting on our protection from harm and exploitation.

Sex trafficking is big business - business that shouldn’t thrive. Today, slavery makes over £33 billion in the UK annually – by exploiting thousands of people for the profit of traffickers. 120,000 people is more than the seating capacity of Wembley Stadium. As service providers, we know the average age individuals are first lured and groomed by predators is 13 years old. Traffickers use manipulation and coercion to trick and control their victims. Children and youth, who are often targeted online, are not equipped to protect themselves from tactics like these. To prevent sex trafficking in our communities, education is key. Our prevention program empowers vulnerable youth with the knowledge and tools to keep themselves and their friends safe from sexual exploitation and sex trafficking. Our caregiver presentations educate those who can protect youth with the knowledge and resources they need to talk to have difficult conversations, recognize the signs, and intervene.
