Transplanting PhDs into fulfilling non-academic careers 🌻 | Dev Psych PhD → Founder @ After Academia | 50+ job offers for my students 💛
The best part about leaving academia is the friends I made along the way: Leaving academia is incredibly lonely. You are giving up something known for the chance at something better. You are leaving behind a community who, for better or worse, understands you. What is left to fill that void? Who will support you? We got you :) Next month, I'll be speaking at PhD Pathways, organized by Mark Bayer, to tell you exactly how to leave academia in weeks, not years. Learn job search strategies that have worked for 1000s of PhDs. Plus, wisdom from the inimitable Ali Divan, Ph.D., Gertrude Nonterah, Ph.D., David Giltner, Dasanj Aberdeen, and David Mendes da Silva, PhD. Register here: https://lnkd.in/gRKr8EWc 💛 P.S. - Being referred to as a "career advancement leader" is such an honor that I want to immediately argue with 😅 ♻️ repost to help a friend :)

#My #PhD #Journey #Reflections: Post 8/10 #Context: End of the 3rd year of PhD: Undoubtedly, pursuing a PhD is challenging, demanding considerable time commitment and long working hours. As I progress in my PhD journey, the challenges intensify. Many tasks emerge, necessitating careful planning, such as preparing for the final defense, submitting a paper to a journal as required by the school, or bolstering your position for future employment, job hunting, and, of course, managing personal life hacks. Securing a job after completing the PhD is important. I recall initiating my search for academic positions by the end of the third year, as recruitment processes typically commence a year in advance. #Recommendations · Firstly, mentally prepare yourself to defend your PhD ideally before the summer break of the 4th year, allowing you to relax during the summer and join your prospective employer in September (although this scenario is ideal, it is achievable with proper planning). · Aim to submit at least one paper from your PhD. This not only familiarizes you with the submission process but also provides insight into your project. Additionally, some schools may require this as part of their criteria, so it's essential to meet this requirement. · Begin job hunting by the end of the third year. Stay active on LinkedIn and invest time in building your application materials, including your CV, cover letter, research statement, and teaching statement. #phdresearch #phdlife #phdjourney

Navigating the period between thesis submission and viva-voce is one of the most challenging phases for a PhD candidate. During this time, you often face: • No financial assistance • Employment hurdles due to the lack of a formal PhD degree • Writing many emails without positive responses • Limited time for interview preparations • Balancing personal and family issues Contrary to what many people think, academia is not always the perfect place for intellectual fulfillment. The struggle is real, and the journey is tough. #PhDLife #AcademicChallenges #Perseverance #PhDjourney

To my sisters in research careers: Did you know that you were made for hard things? You have done hard things before, that’s how you made it this far. So why are you avoiding the hard things on your to do list now? What is the worst that could happen if you take one step forward on one hard thing? When you take the step, notice how you knock down the belief that this thing is hard and your cavewoman brain gets on board and things will start take off. If you are a woman of color researcher, DM me if you’d like to do a consult and hear more about how I can help you do hard things.
