All solutions are here – what are we waiting for? Thank you Cepi for hosting "Energy Efficiency Solutions Forum Day - Towards energy self-sufficient papermaking" in Brussels last week. The pulp and paper industry is the fourth most energy-intensive in Europe. Reducing its energy consumption will play a big role for Europe in reaching climate neutrality by 2050. Key take ways: 👉🏼By integrating fossil-free energy sources, energy-efficient technologies and innovative business models, the pulp and paper sector can cost-effectively achieve decarbonization. AND enable less dependency on plastics and fossil-based materials by replacing it with bio-based solutions. 👉🏼The industry could cut its energy bills in half by recovering heat. Already today, heat recovery based on industrial heat pumps are enabling energy savings for many industries. 👉🏼Commercially available large heat pumps and steam compressors can now heat up to 200°C, meeting the pulp and paper industry’s needs. 👉🏼The industry face challenges to execute and finance heat recovery projects based on new and combination of technologies. Energy as a Service-partnerships could fill a gap in executing these projects.

The competitiveness of European #paper #packaging producers is under pressure due to structurally higher energy costs. Europe went from being one of the lowest-cost regions to one of the highest-cost regions for producers. Decarbonization is also high on the agenda of regulators and other stakeholders along the supply chain. We think mitigating reduced competitiveness and complying with increasing regulations will require paper packaging producers to accelerate the adoption of proven technologies aimed at reducing energy consumption, improving heat supply efficiency, decarbonizing steam supply, and adopting renewable energy sources for general use. #RaboResearch

The Principles for a Purpose-Driven Energy Procurement are aspirational considerations for industry stakeholders to maximize the benefits of clean energy procurement. Let’s take a closer look at the first principle, Environmental Sustainability. By avoidance, minimization, and mitigation measures when siting, developing, and operating clean energy projects — we can respect and conserve our lands. Here are just a few ways how: ✔️ Locations where the marginal emissions reduction to the grid will provide the greatest benefits for climate and human health ✔️ Dual-use approaches such as agrivoltaics, pollinator-friendly solar, etc. ✔️ Project siting on degraded, already disturbed, or repurposed lands where possible There’s more. Learn how you can advance standards to integrate principles of environmental sustainability, resilience, and social considerations in procurement decisions: https://lnkd.in/ej-6qG-V
