The European Commission (EC) has approved International Paper’s acquisition of British e-commerce packaging giant DS Smith. Morrison Foerster is advising Japanese packaging giant Toppan Holdings on its agreement to buy U.S. rival Sonoco's Thermoformed and Flexibles Packaging (TFP) business for approximately $1.8 billion. This combination will create a global leader in sustainable packaging solutions, focused on the attractive and growing North American and EMEA regions. We expect to formally close the transaction on Friday, January 31.

As the year comes to an end, we look back at the biggest packaging industry events and highlights of 2024. While the UN Global Plastic Treaty negotiations resulted in an extra round of discussions to be held next year, the EU’s PPWR final text was approved in November.
