It’s a big day at Aviva Canada as we, in partnership with WWF-Canada, proudly launch the Business and Biodiversity Action Plan. 🌳📘 Our economy is dependent on nature, with at least half of the world’s wealth being moderately or highly dependent on thriving ecosystems. Yet the rapid decline of wildlife populations by 69% in the last 50 years is a stark reminder of the urgent need for action. Every Canadian business, across all industries, plays a pivotal role in this mission. 🎶 I get by with a little kelp from my friends... The #KelpForestChallenge is seeing people, governments and organisations around the world stepping in to help kelp 🌿 South Korea has committed to restoring 54,000 hectares of sea forest by 2030. The restoration process involves installing eco-friendly spore bags and attaching pre-grown seaweed to natural bedrocks. 🌿 Washington State has pledged to conserve and restore over 4,000 hectares of kelp and seagrass by 2040. A key part of the plan is to bring together local Indigenous tribes, community members and local nonprofit orgs in the restoration efforts. 🌿 In Portugal, a municipality is trialling a kelp-seeding technique along the coast of Cascais. The process involves seeding pebbles with kelp in a lab. The seedlings are then released to settle on the underlying bedrock to grow and create new patches of kelp forest. Sea levels are rising, but so are we. Mangroves, the most efficient carbon sinks, are at risk from sea level rise. We are proud to announce that we have established the Ping An Biodiversity and Environmental Conservation Charitable Trust, the first of its kind in China to focus on protecting mangrove ecosystems and nurturing biodiversity. The perpetual Trust, launched with an endowment of RMB10 million from our public welfare foundation, will provide funding for initiatives to protect and restore mangroves, waterbird habitats and more. “If the bees 🐝 disappear from the face of the Earth, humanity will have only four years of life.” This famous quote is attributed to Albert Einstein. And whilst there is no scientific evidence to corroborate the four years, it emphasizes the importance of bees: without them, there is no pollination, thus no reproduction of flora, and hence no food for animals nor humans. In Portugal, severe forest fires have burned extensive territory of forests in recent years and also destroyed hundreds of beehives. Honey being an important raw material for Nestlé and in particular #Nestum, we want to contribute to the restoration of the bee habitat in Portugal. So together with the two largest national beekeeper associations , #FNAP and #FENAPICOLA, Nestlé created the project “Juntos pelas Abelhas” (Together for the Bees) – you can read more about it here: https://lnkd.in/dk-gmNCg. It is now the 4th year we are donating beehives to the Portuguese beekeepers. We provide a certificate attesting to the hectares protected through the donation, and also if needed a letter for tax deduction purposes and the connection remains through the year with quarterly updates on our website. Your hectare(s) will be for Tanoe-Ehy Forest, a high-priority area for primate conservation in West Africa, home to three of the most endangered primates in the region: the Roloway monkey, the White-thighed colobus, and the Miss Waldron's red colobus. Besides primates, there are at least 33 endemic and threatened plant species, two endemic fish species, ten endemic amphibians species, and more than 19 bird species of conservation concern which provide critical resources and cultural values for neighbouring communities. The forest is under threat from illegal logging and poaching as well as gold mining and conversion to oil palm plantations. Your donation will go to fund ranger patrols, biodiversity monitoring, and investments in agroforestry and sustainable agriculture in the villages managing the forest. 80% of the donation goes to the projects, and 20% stays with FCF for operational costs, which include satellite monitoring through Starling, a partnership between the Earthworm Foundation and Airbus. The area is also a sourcing landscape for cocoa, coffee, coconut, palm oil, timber, and gold, and through empowering the Tanoe-Ehy Forest communities, together, we can ‘Keep their Rainforest Standing’. 🌍 On this #WorldEnvironmentDay, we celebrate a decade of #rewilding in the Southern Carpathians with news of the arrival of two new bison herds in Romania! 🦬🌳 Bison reintroduction efforts in the Southern Carpathians began 10 years ago. Between 2014 and 2023, Rewilding Europe and WWF-Romania translocated 99 European bison to the Țarcu Mountains – a part of the Southern Carpathians rewilding landscape where no wild bison had roamed free for at least 250 years. With the population in the landscape now thriving, it currently comprises at least 190 individuals, including the newly arrived groups of #EuropeanBison totalling 14 animals. The two new bison groups represent the first release carried out under the LIFE with Bison initiative, which is taking bison rewilding efforts in the Southern Carpathians to the next level with support from the EU's LIFE Programme. Together, Rewilding Romania, WWF-Romania, and a range of partners including local municipalities will ensure that the growing European bison population and people who live in the landscape can live alongside each other in a balanced and positive way, and that local communities continue to benefit financially from the return of this iconic species, through the area’s burgeoning nature-based economy. 🎥 EU supply chains drive deforestation in biodiversity hotspot as major fires spread: EJF report There is a clear connection between environmental destruction in the Pantanal, one of the world’s largest wetlands, and EU supply chains, according to research by the Environmental Justice Foundation (EJF) using combined data from publicly available sources. 🇧🇷 The Pantanal spreads mostly across the Brazilian states of Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul. This wetland is threatened by major land clearances for cattle ranches, combined with droughts and widespread fires. The Pantanal is currently burning again, and one million hectares of land have already been lost this year. 🇪🇺 The report reveals the extensive links between cattle farming in the Pantanal and supply chains leading to several EU countries. It finds that between 1990 and 2021, the area of pasture land for cattle doubled, reaching 2.54 million hectares - an area that’s almost the size of Belgium. Despite this, deforestation in the Pantanal remains a significantly underreported issue, says the NGO. EJF’s report and accompanying film delve into the impacts of land clearance for cattle on this unique biome, one which EJF says is essential for local communities and Indigenous peoples, carbon sequestration, and unique biodiversity. Data from this report indicate that during 2012-2021, 40,246.9 hectares of native vegetation were converted to pasture within Pantanal-based properties linked to the EU market. ⚽ Compared to 2019-2020, the accelerated conversion of native vegetation to pasture in 2020-2021 is marked, with the loss of Other Wooded Land increasing by 64% and Other Natural Ecosystems by 83% across the Pantanal as a whole. EJF estimates that between 2023 and 2050, the escalation of conversion in the Pantanal could reach 30 football pitches worth of land every day.

"Unintended outcomes"... that's how our project partner Lorraine Waldropt Ferguson described the surprises the encountered when the 'One Seed 4 Change Initiative' NGO rolled - out its EPIC 'Feed to Fork' programme with residents from Heights of Guanapo and Heights of Aripo. The programme aimed to expose participants to rabbit rearing, looking at value added products from rabbit meat and rabbit waste. The OS4C team also trained the residents on how to make their own rabbit feed and pellets. After a successful run in Guanapo, the team took the model to Aripo and there, the participants; mainly children, decided against slaughtering the rabbits for its meat and wanted to start a business - the 'Bunny Builders'. The Bunny Builders will rear and sell live rabbits and make their own pellets. It's an EPIC example of communities deciding what's best for them.
