My last major Georgetown-affiliated project has been published. Over the past year, I had the privilege to research EU climate diplomacy as a Bunker Fellow at the Institute for the Study of Diplomacy, Georgetown University. Throughout this research project, I looked at how the EU can use its climate change goals as a diplomatic tool to improve its relationship with so-called non-aligned countries. In a time where geopolitical dynamics are stimulating a return to great power competition, it is important that actors such as the EU and the U.S. do not fall back upon a Cold War-like bloc mindset. It is of the utmost importance to establish and increase positive, symbiotic relationships with the promising and growing countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America. In this research paper, I take a deeper dive into how the EU could establish such positive relations through climate diplomacy with an African leader in decarbonization and green energy, Kenya. Through this case study, a framework emerges that the EU (and other individual countries) can leverage to combine climate objectives and foreign policy objectives in one diplomatic course of action - all while helping climate-vulnerable countries address their often forgotten needs. https://lnkd.in/ecH9fwW8

economic diplomacy can serve multiple purposes - protecting a country's economic interests, using economic leverage through sanctions, and dangling incentives to achieve foreign policy goals. The specific approach taken often depends on the country's economic strengths, strategic priorities, and the dynamics of the international environment. The key is that economic diplomacy has become an increasingly important tool for countries to navigate the complex web of global economic interdependence and pursue their national interests. It allows them to leverage their economic resources and position to influence international affairs beyond just traditional security or political concerns.

The problems we face today, from climate crisis to global health pandemics, the rise of extremism, polarization, and the question of competition in space, oceans, and our planet, in addition to the volume of GDP that is a function of international trade; we are witnessing a third phase movement towards an open architecture of diplomacy in which government alone, however important and needed, cannot solve the global challenges of the day. Transitioning from a military-focused national interest to a more balanced approach is achievable, but it requires a combination of shifting global dynamics, economic imperatives, public sentiment, and successful models of post-conflict reconstruction. By embracing diplomacy, economic development, and international cooperation, nations can redefine their national interests to reflect a more holistic understanding of security and prosperity in an interconnected world.
