Dear community, The administrators at the International Research Olympiad (IRO) have decided to close registration sooner than anticipated due to extremely high demand. While this is exciting news for many of our competitors who have already registered, we urge those who have not registered yet to register as soon as possible. We cannot wait for the Opens Examination, and to begin grading students' exams! We have set a cap on the number of registrants that is likely to reach capacity in the next day or two. This is due to our capacity on judges to grade students' responses, and for proctoring/administering the semi-finals exam (as this will be the top 10% of Open Exams scorers). As such, if you want to participate in the 2024 IRO, we urge you to make your registration today. Confirmation emails for students who registered by February 20th, 5:30pm EST have already been sent. If you registered before that date but have not received an email yet, it means you are not registered—as such, please ensure you have registered. Registration website: https://lnkd.in/eeMdsgYe Best regards, Student Board of Advisors International Research Olympiad

The University of Zurich has decided to withdraw from the Times Higher Education World University Ranking stating: "Although rankings purport to comprehensively measure universities’ diverse achievements in teaching and research, they cannot do so as they reduce indicators to a score and focus on quantitative criteria." University rankings can be a useful tool, however, they also carry a number of issues. They often rely heavily on research output and funding, which means they may not accurately reflect the quality of education or student experience. They also often fail to consider diversity, inclusivity, and the specific needs and goals of individual students. Also, the methodology behind rankings can lack transparency, and they can disproportionately favor older, more established institutions. https://lnkd.in/eEVPW4fr #researchimpacat #universities #rankings

In #IHE118, "Academic Star Wars" by Jamil Salmi, Philip Altbach and Maria Yudkevich analyzes massive government-funded "Academic Excellence Initiatives" (AEIs). AEIs across Asia and Europe are aimed at rapidly boosting research output and university rankings. Around $100B was spent, with China alone investing at least $50B. While achieving goals like increased research productivity, talent concentration, and internationalization, the AEIs also raised concerns around excessive government control, sustainability after funding ends, tensions between adopting global vs local priorities, and potential impacts on academic freedom in some countries. The book provides a comparative analysis of using large investments to drive rapid enhancements in academic excellence and global competitiveness of universities. The University of Zurich exits from the Times Higher Education #Rankings, citing limitations in capturing a university's full value. While the universities are slow to change (sometime too slow) but rickety univ. ranking games are as volatile as stock markets! Opt-Out Movement finds the univ. rankings narrow and focusing on dubious matrices, subjective based on fewer weighting factors, manipulable by universities, and unequal that reinforce hierarchies. Rankings can distort priorities for universities and policymakers. UZH's prioritizes excellence over rankings! https://lnkd.in/eMBpkrTG

Excellent initiative.
The University of Zurich (where also Einstein studied and became professor at) which is highly respected globally, has decided to stop participating in ranking systems. They believe that these rankings encourage universities to prioritize quantity over quality in research, leading to unnecessary and questionable publications and innovative ideas . Instead of focusing on meaningful scientific progress, some university staff may feel pressured to churn out papers and KPIIs just to boost the institution's reputation. The university sees this as a negative trend, turning education into a profit-driven business. Therefore, they've opted out of this competition to maintain their commitment to genuine academic pursuit. https://lnkd.in/diPa86zd
