Great Behavioral Science & Policy Association (BSPA) conference last week on applying Behavioural Insights to policy and practice with a specific focus this year on Technology and Society! One standout session featured Irene González and Marta Garnelo Caamaño sharing insights from their study in Uruguay aimed at reducing student absenteeism. I love how delivering targeted data to the appropriate audience can trigger meaningful behavioural change at minimal cost. Other personal highlights included: - Simon Johnson advocating for pre-bunking in schools as a psychological inoculation against misinformation - The International Rescue Committee brilliantly employing the messenger effect through faith leaders in the Church of Uganda to reduce intimate partner violence - A great quote from Jennifer Pahlka - "Waterfall environments are a pledge by all parties not to learn anything while doing the work". I love this being a big fan of Agile! - A superb quote by Thomas Tasche - "The nudge is dead, long live the nudge(d organisation)". I totally agree that Behavioural science should be at the core of how organisations operate. #BehaviouralInsights #Policy #Technology #Society #BSPA2024

Sludge is an ever-evolving concept with multiple types identified, despite being a relatively new term. In this article, we explore newly identified types of online sludge or dark patterns, such as new techniques to pressure sell and ‘hypernudges’. These are becoming more common with the introduction of AI to online shopping. Sludge is something we have written about extensively and take seriously at The Behavioural Architects. The ever-increasing presence of sludge, particularly online, has inspired our most recent article, out now in Impact’s e-magazine, Eyes Wide Open! This article arms you with the knowledge to be more aware and combative of sludge tactics and outlines the vital role of behavioural science in auditing for sludge to create a fairer environment for consumers. Last week I attended and presented at my first conference, CBSM! It was such a great experience. Not only did I receive valuable feedback and suggestions for my PhD project, but I also left feeling inspired and motivated after listening to all of the great research from other researchers. A particular stand out message for me, was the importance of science communication. Professor Mike Bunce spoke about his work with environmental DNA in New Zealand and how they have involved the communities in their research. He spoke about how many of the rivers and lakes in New Zealand are unsafe to swim in. Through eDNA studies, they are able to keep track of this and learn more. However, this is a large and expensive project. By teaching the communities to collect eDNA for them, the communities then not only have a better understanding of the problems, but also become advocates for the importance of this research. While one voice might not gather funding, 100s of voices might. While this research is very different to my own and to many of my connections, it highlights to me that one researcher or even a group of researchers, can only get so far. If the community doesn't know or understand what you are researching, that research loses so much potential value. Working in the lab simply isn't enough and I hope to improve my science communication and reach. #sciencecommunication #CBSM2024
