🤔 What does a part-time PhD look like? How do people manage it? As you'll know, I am embarking on a part-time PhD while managing a full-time role at Department for Science, Innovation and Technology. It is undoubtedly a challenging yet rewarding endeavour. In all honesty, it requires meticulous planning, unwavering dedication, and perhaps too much caffeine. Here, I wanted delve into strategies to find balance and what a typical day might look like for someone juggling these responsibilities. I often get asked what does a typical PhD day look like for me, well it looks very different every week. At the moment I have a set non-working day on a Thursday, so I seek to align all my sessions/conversations then. I also pick up other things and work on chapters/editing during the week. Today I caught up with a fave Alisha Iyer from the UCL Policy Lab on all things academia and public policy. Fun fact - we both used to work for Department for Culture, Media and Sport together! Another fun fact, she did her undergraduate at UCL SSEES where I am doing my PhD! Conversations like these are the reasons why I'm doing my PhD in the first place at UCL SSEES - looking at how the academics and policy makers connect. Tagging some incredible institutions in UCL who are doing great work. What interesting conversations have you been a part of? #PhDThursdays #EarlyCareersResearcher #PublicPolicy #Academia #Impact #PhD

The outcomes of this Rathenau research on the conditions and experiences of PhD-candidates are now also available in English. Relevant (and recognizable?) for all involved in PhD-research. Not only when you’re a candidate, but also also for supervisors, research support, and management.
Beginning researchers sometimes struggle with uncertainty. The quality standards they need to meet are often unclear. The environment in which they work seems informal, but turns out to be hierarchical. And what exactly they need to do for their next career step is often obscure. The Rathenau Instituut spoke with PhD candidates, postdocs, and practice-oriented researchers about the obstacles they encounter in their work. And about ways to remove them.

In her first blog as Associate Pro-Vice-Chancellor for the Researcher Academy and Research Culture Development, Professor Jeanette Woolard shares how the University of Nottingham is driving positive change in research culture. Key initiatives include the Return to Research programme, offering funding to support researchers returning after extended leave, and REC-HURDLES, a Wellcome Trust-funded project tackling contract precarity as well as expanding career development for underrepresented groups. These, along with refreshed academic pathways and new interdisciplinary research networks, aim to foster an inclusive, thriving environment for research excellence. It is my responsibility as a writer to produce engaging, informative, and persuasive content that appeals to the audience I am targeting. Conveying information effectively and aligning the content with the company's aims and voice are the same objectives when writing blog posts, social media updates, website text, or marketing materials. Research and creativity must be used to create information that is accurate, timely, and interesting. It is essential to retain coherence and clarity when adapting writing style for different platforms and readers in order to boost reader engagement and assist customers or employers in achieving their goals.
