World’s first ‘supercar’ expected to be sold for record-breaking price at auction The Mercedes-Simplex 60 HP, bought in 1903 by press baron Alfred Harmsworth, is expected to sell for £8 million. Bought in 1903 by the press baron Alfred Harmsworth and capable of the then almost inconceivable speed of 80mph, it has been described as one of the world’s first “supercars”. The Mercedes-Simplex 60 HP was the fastest production car in the world at the start of the 20th century. Now it is set to break more records when it goes under the hammer with an anticipated auction price of £8 million, making it the most expensive antique car to be sold at auction. Interest from wealthy collectors is expected to be high, with hot competition for a vehicle described as “among the finest and most significant of all antique cars” ever made. The record for a pre-1930s car is currently held by a 1924 Hispano-Suiza H6C “Tulipwood” Torpedo which sold for $9,245,000 (more than £7.3 million) in 2022. The Mercedes-Simplex 60 HP “Roi des Belges” is being sold by Gooding and Company’s Amelia Island Auctions in Florida on Feb 29 and March 1. https://lnkd.in/e2qtvJbY

HOW ACCURATE ARE GUIDE PRICES AT AUCTION? https://buff.ly/39HpPlV It’s true that property auction guide prices are calculated based on each lot’s “fair market value”. However, auctioneers often display marginally lower prices in order to attract bids. So it’s a good idea for buyers to consult guide prices for what to offer as a bid. Don’t stick to them religiously, though. It’s highly that you’ll end up paying a little more than the amount listed (especially in a hot market or if the property is in demand). If you’re a potential buyer, you should always arrange a viewing of any property in which you are interested. You should also do your own research into the sale prices of similar local houses. You may also want to arrange an independent survey to make sure you are thinking along the right lines when it comes to a bid. It is worth noting that, much like the reserve price, a property’s guide price may be changed right up until the auction. Call us 24/7 on 0800 044 3733 or visit us at: https://buff.ly/39HpPlV

Rare and Unusual: The Strangest Items Ever Sold at Auction This article explores some of the strangest items ever sold at auction, proving that there's a market for almost anything. Feb 01, 2024 In the world of auctions, the phrase "one person's trash is another's treasure" takes on a whole new meaning. From the bizarre to the downright perplexing, auctions have seen a parade of items that defy expectation and sometimes, explanation. This article explores some of the strangest items ever sold at auction, proving that there's a market for almost anything. A Slice of Royal Cake Imagine owning a piece of history, quite literally, in the form of a slice of cake. But not just any cake - a slice from the 1981 wedding cake of Prince Charles and Princess Diana. Despite being over three decades old, this piece of culinary history found a buyer willing to pay thousands for the honor. It's a testament to the enduring fascination with royal memorabilia, even when it's perishable. Invisible Artwork Art can be a subjective experience, but what about art that's literally invisible? In an auction that left many scratching their heads, an "invisible" sculpture by an Italian artist was sold. The artwork, made of nothing but air, fetched a substantial sum, challenging traditional notions of value and the essence of art itself. A Ghost in a Jar Perhaps one of the most eyebrow-raising auctions involved a "ghost" purportedly trapped in a jar. The seller claimed the ghost had been haunting his home, and the only solution was to capture it and sell it to the highest bidder. While it's impossible to verify the existence of the ghost, the jar found a buyer, proving the appetite for the paranormal in the auction world. Learn More: https://lnkd.in/gd7dh6au
