Owing to the highly competitive environment at b-schools, where every student is an over-achiever, students and graduates often get lost in self-doubt and imposter syndrome. University of Virginia Darden School of Business' dean, Scott C. Beardsley shared meaningful advice on nurturing self-worth on the commencement day for the graduating MBA Class of 2024. He talked about the need for graduates to look inwards and cultivate their own potential, instead of looking outward and comparing themselves with others or setting unrealistic expectations. He gave this seven-point path to abate the internal strife and work towards realistic self-improvement: ● Stop leaping to self-judgements that pull you down and make you feel inadequate and anxious over not meeting our own prescriptive standards. ● In an age of artificial intelligence, focus “not on AI but I”. Build intelligence about what you as a human learn and feel and how you improve your wellbeing. Instead of focusing on what you don’t have, start by understanding yourself and your unique strengths and virtues. ● Practice gratitude. It is an antidote to envy and self-comparison and increases wellbeing. Believe in yourself, understand your special strengths and values by exercising gratitude for what’s going right and all those who helped you along your journey. A bonus is, bringing gratitude out in other people. ● Remember that your most important investment is in you and your well-being, with a focus on true fulfilment. Many students come to b-school calculating the ROI. But in your personal journey, the ROI, is the return on “I” or yourself, with the return currency being your own wellbeing and fulfilment. ● Have goals, and make sure they are ones likely to produce happiness and overall well-being. ● Adopt a lifelong learning mindset, seeing even mistakes or missteps as opportunities for learning. When you make mistakes, learn from them instead of self-judging yourself and move on with the learning. When you see a gap, think of it as an opportunity to improve, rather than a problem. ● Choose optimism and hope over pessimism, developing a mindset of optimism in the face of significant and real challenges. https://lnkd.in/ezZ7kGb8
