High school students often have a limited understanding of the multitude of career paths available to them. They mostly learn about careers from what they see in their families, local community, and summer jobs. They're often told to focus on doing well in school, joining extracurricular activities, and building leadership skills to get into a "good" college. However, this approach alone doesn't always help students develop a clear sense of who they are and what they want to do, which is crucial for finding meaningful and exciting work. In Donald Super's career development model, he emphasizes the importance of developing a "positive self-concept" in guiding students through their career journeys (Super, 1990). Without this positive self-concept, it's challenging for students to pursue work that truly aligns with who they are and what they want. So, when students are unsure about their college and major choices, it's essential to step back and help them explore themselves and different career options more deeply. This exploration involves guiding students to think about their interests, values, personality traits, and preferences for the workplace. They can then test how this self-knowledge fits into the world of work by shadowing professionals, conducting informational interviews, and using online resources like O*Net to see how their interests and skills match up with different careers. At this stage, students don't need to have all the answers about their future careers. Instead, they can use self-reflection and career exploration to broaden their horizons, make more informed decisions about college and careers, and work on developing a stronger sense of self. By helping students create a career search framework based on their interests, values, and preferences, rather than just focusing on academic and extracurricular achievements, we are teaching them how to find fulfilling and productive roles in the workforce.
