For long-term residents of the Dadaab Refugee Complex, learning new skills and finding sources of income provide hope for a better future. ITC has been working with Nyota Farsamo, a Somali-Kenyan artisan collective, to help refugees attain a dignified life. In 2023, the collective joined an initiative of the UN Refugee Agency (MADE51) that allows members to access social enterprise partners from across world regions, along with opportunities for seed funding to start their businesses. 🔗 http://bit.ly/40SJ18v

World Refugee Day is observed annually on June 20th. This date celebrates the resilience, courage, and impacts of refugees worldwide. It is a day dedicated to raising awareness about the plight of forcibly displaced individuals and advocating for their rights, protection, and well-being. Every year, We Are All America (WAAA) invites local leaders, partners, and advocates to join a series of impactful actions and events aimed at celebrating our refugee communities, engaging local elected officials, and learning more about ways to support refugees and refugee resettlement. As part of these efforts, WAAA, Refugee Congress, Refugee Advocacy Lab, and IRAP are launching a Digital Week of Action, a dynamic initiative designed to mobilize the field of forcibly displaced people and their supporters. This week-long campaign harnesses the power of social media, online platforms, and digital advocacy to amplify the voices of refugees, share their stories, and highlight the urgent need for robust refugee protections and resettlement programs. https://lnkd.in/gBxPEivU

Wilfrid Laurier University student Stellah Nikuze is advocating for policy change to protect the rights of refugee women and youth. "For refugees like my parents and siblings, there is no hope of returning to Rwanda, and it is not easy to resettle in Uganda or another country. They are stuck, basically. Thousands of refugees experience this reality and that’s why policy change is so important. There need to be policies and pathways in place to allow refugees to find hope and build a life beyond a settlement." Nikuze recently accepted a two-year appointment to the Refugee Advisory Group (RAG), part of the Consultations on Resettlement and Complementary Pathways (CRCP) of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). RAG is the official body of refugee representatives at the CRCP, an annual event that brings international partners in government, academia, the private sector and non-governmental organizations together to discuss and advance resettlement issues. 🌍 According to the UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, forced displacement has reached a staggering 120 million people in 2024. This #WorldRefugeeDay, we are remembering all the displaced individuals for whom being a refugee is just one aspect of their complex identities. This status can most of the time make it almost impossible, to access education, information, healthcare, and to integrate into communities—things many of us often take for granted. At Jangala, we reflect on our journey from the refugee crisis in northern France to providing vital Wi-Fi connectivity to displaced individuals worldwide. World Refugee Day 2024, for Rohingya refugees in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh is a day of remembrance, resilience, and advocacy. It serves as an opportunity to raise awareness of the challenges faced by Rohingya refugees, promote their rights and dignity, and advocate for sustainable solutions. No one chooses to be a refugee unless their lives are at risk due to the harsh realities of conflict, persecution, and the dire circumstances in their homeland. On this journey, there is no clear roadmap or destination, only the desperate search for safety, security, and a chance for a better tomorrow. Together, we can create a more inclusive and compassionate world where every refugee gets the opportunity to rebuild their lives in the face of unimaginable challenges. . Every refugee deserves a future. Refugees are ordinary people. Everyone can be a difference. #WorldRefugeeDay #humanrights #RefugeeLivesMatter #Myanmar #RohingyaCrisis #WithRefugees #StandWithRefugees #camplife

🌍 Empowering Municipalities Across Europe to Lead on Refugee Integration 🌍 Municipalities across Europe are taking on the dual challenge of welcoming and integrating refugees, which requires both immediate and long-term strategies. As they lead the ‘sprint’ of refugee reception and the ‘marathon’ of integration, municipalities are increasingly focusing on socioeconomic inclusion. UNHCR’s latest brief highlights the crucial role of these local governments in addressing key areas such as funding, affordable housing, and strategic population distribution, all while ensuring that refugees and migrants are effectively integrated into the local labor force. A significant focus of the brief is on the potential for refugees to contribute to inclusive economies. Refugees and migrants can fill critical labor shortages, support local businesses, and revitalize declining areas. However, for this to succeed, municipalities need expert guidance to develop proposals that attract private sector investment. The rapid and extraordinary response from the private sector during the Ukrainian refugee crisis is a model that can be leveraged, but sustained success will require structured, long-term partnerships that facilitate investment in infrastructure and socioeconomic integration. To amplify these efforts, fostering direct connections between refugees and the private sector is essential. 🔗 Learn more by exploring the full brief here: https://lnkd.in/dyGPBnHK #PrivateSectorSolutions #RefugeeIntegration #IFCUNHCR #InclusiveEconomies #AffordableHousing #PublicPrivatePartnerships #MunicipalLeadership #Europe #UNHCR #IFC

Nakivale Refugee Settlement is home to over 120,000 refugees from various countries. In July alone, more than 3,000 individuals used the Hello Hubs across Nakivale Refugee Settlement to access the internet and charge their phones. While this is a positive step forward, it represents only about 2.5% of the community. More needs to be done to ensure greater access to the internet and to close the digital literacy gap. We would like to learn more about how your work supports vital digital resources to those who need them most. Together, we can transform lives through connectivity and education.
