As well as updates to reflect the prohibition of tramadol in-competition, there are refinements to key definitions and practices such as courtsiding which players and other persons involved in the sport will need to be aware of. ❗️ THE TAS/CAS Tribunal Arbitral du Sport / Court of Arbitration for Sport / Tribunal Arbitral del Deporte UPHOLDS THE APPEAL FILED BY SIMONA HALEP AND REDUCES HER PERIOD OF INELIGIBILITY FROM 4 YEARS TO 9 MONTHS 💉 Simona Halep, the Romanian tennis star, was banned from competing after a prohibited substance (Roxadustat) was found to be present in a sample collected from her on 29 August 2022 during the US Open. She contested that it was the result of contamination. Additionally, she was charged based on her Athelte Biological Passport as a result of a blood sample taken on 22 September 2022 that allegedly demonstrated use of a prohibited substance/method. 👩⚖️ The CAS Panel has unanimously determined that the four-year period of ineligibility imposed by the International Tennis Federation Independent Tribunal is to be reduced to a period of ineligibility of nine months starting on 7 October 2022, which period expired on 6 July 2023. 📝 Specifically, the Panel determined that whilst Ms Halep did not exercise utmost caution as to the contamination, she bore no significant fault or negligence. A tennis ball bounces the same way in Africa as it does in Europe, China or America. The difference is not in ability/talent but more in the coaching and access to tournaments/ events on a regular basis. Note the coaching and the reps must come first. The #10000Hours. African countries need their own academies with a critical mass of quality coaches. ITF, USPTR etc etc. The home set up (federations, parents, families, sponsors) need to participate. IBIA Q3 2023 Integrity Report is out! 👉 50 suspicious betting alerts reported to relevant authorities 👉 Football and tennis accounted for 56% of all Q3 alerts 👉 Spotlight on North America: 84 alerts reported on sporting events taking place in North America between 2018-2022 Khalid Ali, IBIA CEO, said: “The quarter saw a continued reduction in alerts with a more than 30% decrease in the first three quarters relative to 2022, with tennis a major contributory factor. During the quarter, IBIA and The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) co-hosted a best practice integrity seminar in New York with many of the premier sports and betting operators in the US. Today I will be starting with the history of tennis worldwide, in Africa, and specifically in Nigeria. Tennis has a fascinating history that dates back centuries. Its origins can be traced to various ball games played in ancient civilizations like Egypt, Greece, and Rome. However, modern tennis as we know it today emerged in the 19th century in England. The game gained popularity and spread across the world, leading to the establishment of the first tennis championship, Wimbledon, in 1877. This prestigious tournament is still held annually and is considered one of the most prestigious events in the tennis calendar. In Africa, tennis has been growing in popularity. Many African countries have their tennis federations and participate in international competitions. Some notable African tennis players include Yannick Noah from Cameroon, Amanda Coetzer from South Africa, and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga from France (who has Congolese and French roots). In Nigeria, tennis has been actively promoted and developed by the Nigeria Tennis Federation, which was established in 1976. The country has produced talented tennis players such as Nduka Odizor and Enefiok Udo-Obong, who have represented Nigeria in international tournaments. Now, let's talk about the meaning of tennis. Tennis is a sport that involves two players (singles) or two teams of two players (doubles). The players use rackets to hit a ball over a net into the opponent's court. The objective is to score points by making the ball bounce twice in the opponent's court or by forcing them to hit the ball out of bounds. Tennis is not just about physical prowess; it requires strategy, agility, and mental focus. It's a sport that can be played competitively or recreationally, and it offers numerous health benefits such as improved cardiovascular fitness, coordination, and strength. Happy to share my latest article on match-fixing in individual sports, with a focus on badminton and tennis (although similar principles apply universally) published in the San Diego International Law Journal. The article takes a basic law and economics approach in order to show at what global rank athletes in these two sports break even in terms of cost and earnings. It goes on to show the increased risk of match-fixing for those athletes whose costs are higher than their earnings, particularly where their games are bettable. When we read Wednesday's announcement that the combined British and Irish bid to host EURO 2028 is now the only one left on the table, two issues immediately sprang to mind: 1. While there is no denying that this is great news for the five nations involved, it is yet another example of a worrying trend, namely that so few countries now have the will or the wherewithal to stage sporting events on this scale. If this trend continues, how long will it be before the European Championships, the World Cup or even the Olympics are scaled down, or even cancelled entirely, due to lack of interest? 2. Secondly, according to reports we saw on Wednesday, UEFA would like Scotland, England, Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland and Wales to go through the standard qualifying procedure, but would reserve up to two places at the finals in case any of the host nations failed to qualify on merit. That seems to suggest that at least two of the home nations will qualify by default even if they're not good enough to progress from their qualifying group, which would raise questions as to the fairness of the qualification system. Moreover, it could well prompt some national FA’s to question once again why Scotland, England, Northern Ireland and Wales compete as four separate nations in international tournaments, but contribute to a GB and NI team at the Olympics.
