🌟🌊 Exciting News! 13 projects have received the green light and are now funded by the Interreg Euro-MED Programme in the 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗮! We, at the Interreg Euro-MED Natural Heritage, extend our heartfelt congratulations to all the beneficiaries and look forward to an inspiring future collaboration! 🤝🌱 📅 After a year filled with diligent planning and strategy development, our Mission is all set to work alongside its thematic projects. 𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗴𝗼𝗮𝗹? To magnify the impact of innovative solutions that will aid in the greening of the Mediterranean region. 🌳🌍 🔍 Our 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 a diverse range of topics, including: 🌿 Solutions and tools for wetlands 🐠 Protecting and restoring the marine environment 🏖️ Reduction of anthropogenic pressures in coastal areas 🌳 Forest Management 🌾 Soil carbon farming 🚒 Risk management of climate change impacts 🌐 We warmly welcome these thematic projects into our community. 🌊 Coastal regions are amongst the most productive and biodiverse environments, yet they are experiencing progressive degradation and escalating risks. 🏖 🦀 Nature restoration in European coastal zones is valuable to many economic sectors in society, but we lack the tools to translate that value to attract investors or have beneficiaries of ecosystem services pay for them. 👉 How are we going to upscale nature restoration 🌍🐟 🦆 in coastal areas from pilot to coastal zones? 🌊 🏖 👉 How can we broaden the funding base (from small amounts of public funding) by developing innovative financial arrangements that pay for all the ecosystem services that are actually provided? 💳 💰 💹 💸 Including better collaboration and dialogue? 🤝 We investigate this in the European Commission funded 🌊 #RESTCOAST Horizon Innovative Action project. Nature Seychelles' Reef Rescuers project has been driving large-scale #reefrestoration since 2010. Among other amazing achievements, it empowers students to conduct ground-breaking research essential for coral reef rehabilitation. Notably, Viktoria Sturm and Emily Croasdale, two outstanding students, have earned the honour this year of presenting their findings at the prestigious European Coral Reef Symposium #ecrs2024. Our concerted efforts are yielding invaluable skill sets and knowledge crucial for enhanced conservation and restoration. We push for diversity in these efforts, linking national and international talent, understanding that Seychelles with its small and aeging population has extremely limited human resources thus constraining the search for solutions. The current phase of the project is funded by the Adaptation Fund through UNDP and the Government of Seychelles. 🌟 Exciting Announcement! 🌟 I am thrilled to share that I have been invited to join Plan Bleu as a 🎙 speaker at the Roundtable “From Policy to Action” during the Annual Institutional Dialogue organized by the Interreg Euro-MED Programme #Dialogue4Nature (D4N) project. This significant event will take place on November 28th, 2024, in the beautiful city of Malaga, Spain. 🇪🇸✨ 👉 Why is this important? The Mediterranean region, renowned for its rich biodiversity and diverse ecosystems, faces increasing threats from human activities and climate change. Despite numerous policies and frameworks, translating these into tangible actions remains a significant hurdle. The #D4N project, part of the Interreg Euro-MED Programme, aims to bridge this gap by fostering cooperation, sharing knowledge, promoting best practices, and mainstreaming the results of Thematic Projects (TPs) into various policy levels. 🌍🔍 The Roundtable “From Policy to Action” will focus on policy solutions for marine and coastal restoration in the Euro-Mediterranean region. It will gather stakeholders to identify policy obstacles and solutions—technical, financial, and data-related—culminating in a joint policy statement to enhance regional and international ecosystem restoration efforts. 🗣️🌊 Given my expertise in Marine Biology and the Blue Economy, and my recent contribution to a Plan Bleu Scoping Study with Flavia Cavaliere, I am excited to bring my insights and experience to the discussions. During the event, I will elaborate on the need for a “Blue Economy Framework” that contributes to biodiversity preservation, linking policy to action, and presenting insights and indicators from the recent Plan Bleu Scoping Study. 🌊 Marine Spatial Planning (MSP) is the area-based policy under the umbrella of Sustainable Ocean Plans in line with the commitment of the High Level Panel for a Sustainable Ocean Economy. 🌐 The 18 countries of the #OceanPanel envision the sustainable management of 100% of ocean areas under national jurisdiction by 2025 - guided by Sustainable Ocean Plans. They also urged all coastal and ocean states to join them in this aim and developed this guide for countries to kickstart or accelerate their plans ➡️ https://lnkd.in/dePBUhdU 🤝 Did you know that to support countries with technical and financial assistance to develop their Sustainable Ocean Plans, the #OceanAction2030 coalition was convened which UNESCO Ocean is part of?
