The Golden Gate Bridge stands as a testament to human ingenuity and engineering achievements. Completed in 1937, the iconic suspension bridge spans 1.7 miles across the Golden Gate Strait, connecting San Francisco to Marin County. The bridge was designed to withstand strong winds, ocean currents, and earthquakes, making it a remarkable feat of engineering. The project was led by chief engineer Joseph Strauss and his team, who employed innovative techniques and engineering marvels of the time. Here are some key aspects of the bridge's amazing construction: 1. Design: The bridge was designed as a suspension bridge, with two main towers and a main span suspended by steel cables. 2. Materials: The bridge's main structure is made of steel, with over 83,000 tons of it used in its construction. 3. Safety Measures: Given the challenging environmental conditions, safety was a top priority during construction. Workers were equipped with safety nets, which saved the lives of 19 individuals who fell during construction. 4. Construction Techniques: Engineers used a combination of traditional and innovative construction techniques, including floating derricks to assemble the towers and a unique movable scaffolding system to paint the bridge. 5. Paint Color: The iconic orange-red color of the bridge, known as "International Orange," was chosen to enhance visibility in foggy conditions and to complement the natural surroundings. 6. Completion Time: Despite the challenges posed by the treacherous waters and strong winds, the construction of the Golden Gate Bridge was completed in just over four years, which was considered an impressive feat at the time. Anyone use ZoLa New York City's Zoning & Land Use Map recently? It's great to determine the zoning district of a particular parcel and learn about intersecting map layers. But it doesn't have everything you're looking for. You still need to refer to the NYC Zoning resolution to calculate ZFA, building height, Max dwelling units and minimum parking in order to get an idea of what you can build. It's always felt good to be in an aesthetically-pleasing mass timber building, and as building codes change, architects and engineers are seeking to expand the use of mass timber to enjoy all of its benefits.
