SASO, Saudi Standards Metrology and Quality Organization, in collaboration with the Saudi Ports Authority (MAWANI), has announced a temporary ban on the import of vehicles from 20 automakers into the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia This decision follows the automakers' failure to submit their supply plans for 2024 within the designated timeframe. Saudi automobile agents will be restricted from importing new light vehicles, weighing less than 3.5 tons, from these automakers until the companies comply by submitting their supply plans for 2024. The deadline for submission is the end of the current year. The list of affected automakers will be available on the unified electronic portal for energy efficiency. According to technical regulations, each automaker must register its supply plan for vehicles. Transport General Authority Issues Regulations on Order Delivery Business The Transport General Authority (TGA) issued yesterday six regulations to govern the order delivery sector and boost the efficiency, reliability, and safe delivery of services. The regulations introduce a uniform for non-Saudis working in delivery services, require non-Saudis to work only through light transport companies, grant permission to light transport vehicles to display advertisements, require delivery applications to use face recognition technology to verify a driver’s identity, determine the requirements for the use of motorcycles to deliver orders, in coordination with the General Directorate of Traffic, and stipulate that Saudis may continue to work in the field. Saudi Arabia's automotive market has solidified its position as a significant player globally, ranking among the top 20 car markets worldwide. The kingdom's car imports have surged, accounting for over 50% of all car sales in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. According to the Zakat, Tax, and Customs Authority (ZATCA), Saudi Arabia imported 93,199 cars in 2023 and 66,870 cars in 2022, totaling over 160,000 cars during the 2022-2023 period. The top exporting countries to Saudi Arabia include Japan, India, the Republic of Korea, the United States, and Thailand, as revealed by ZATCA spokesperson Hamoud Al-Harbi. To ensure the safety and quality of vehicles, the Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organization (SASO) inspected 60,473 vehicles in 2023, adhering to the highest technical and safety standards. SASO also prioritizes energy efficiency and product safety, issuing 18,150 energy efficiency certificates for tire products in 2023. Notably, the organization saw a remarkable 465% increase in certificates of conformity for electric vehicles in 2023 compared to the previous year. Additionally, SASO issued 1,505 fuel efficiency labels for new light vehicles, supporting the transition to clean energy.
