"Usually, when I advise clients on the merits of submitting an application for a Certificate of Immunity from Listing, I explain that the risk is that if it is not granted, then the building will automatically be listed. Not so for City Hall." The famous London City Hall building has been refused listing for a second time, paving the way for proposals to overhaul the 22-year-old landmark. Partner Lucy Markham from our Historic Environment and Townscape team reviews the curious case of the City Hall listing, highlighting the careful balance required between preserving modern architecture and allowing time for proper historical context. 📍 Moor Lane, Bolton. Step Places faced an extremely tight funding deadline for securing planning permission for the Moor Lane site, in part due to its significant strategic importance within the 2017 Bolton Town Centre Framework. A 'key intervention area' and not to mention a vital route for improving pedestrian movement across the town, the site was already of significant interest to local politicians, stakeholders and the community. On top of all that, half of the site lies within the Town Hall Conservation Area, and in the setting of two important listed buildings. Our challenge was therefore... 🏘️ Get the design absolutely right ⌛ Do so incredibly quickly Intrigued? Numerous European-built buildings in Asia, predicated on European-type plans, have distinct references to local architecture. Traditional styles continue today, particularly in housing estates adjacent to super-Modernist environments, such as high-rise suburbs in China. Throwback to a brilliant moment when I had the opportunity to witness Melbourne’s urban vibrancy, one of the world’s most liveable cities. City of Melbourne's journey towards liveability is built on its dedication to quality urban design, activating public spaces like laneway movements to transport networks. These efforts have created an environment that not only serves today’s residents but also ensures future generations have something to look forward to. In many respects, Singapore shares a similar vision. From our well-designed built environments to our efficient transport systems, both cities are committed to creating spaces that enhance quality of life. Much like Melbourne, Singapore’s forward-thinking urban planning ensures our city remains resilient, sustainable, and liveable for the future. If your city has demonstrated a commitment to improving urban spaces, fostering liveability, and delivering innovative design solutions, consider nominating it for the LKY World City Prize. It’s an opportunity to share best practices, showcase your city’s achievements, and inspire others globally. #UrbanDesign #CityPlanning #LiveableCities #Singapore #Melbourne #LKYWorldCityPrize #SustainableCities
Whether it is activating their popular laneways, or prioritising the creation of more well-designed buildings and environments and improving their transport networks, City of Melbourne’s continuous improvements to enhance the quality of their environments have made them one of the most #LiveableCities in the world. Hear from Sally Capp AO, former Lord Mayor of Melbourne (2024 Special Mention) on the impact of some of their initiatives, with the belief that investing in good design matters in creating “a significant impact today and for generations to come.” #LKYWCP #UrbanDesign #UrbanPlanning #Architecture

Watching and documenting the transformation of Interlachen Country Club over the past year has been a rewarding challenge. Of all the content we created around the renovation, this series is my favorite. In the Fall of 2022, I got inspiration from a building construction timelapse and wondered if I could accomplish the same thing with our golf course. Over the next 6 months, I tested various software, flight paths, and workflows to make something like this a reality. I did tests for height, speed, and routing based on the layout of the time, but knew I'd need to capture the changes in routing (like the 10th green moving 50 yards). My goal was to fly over each hole once a week during construction, but each week presented a different challenge due to what part of the course was being worked on, heavy winds and smoke from wildfires (thanks Canada), maximizing flight time on each battery, etc. I ended up getting pretty close to one flyover a week but I had to make lots of adjustments along the way. I quickly gave up on the idea that each flight was going to be perfect and learned to chip away at optimizing each hole. I did my best to match everything up and trusted that I could do the rest in post-production. We used the footage in different ways over the summer for general course updates, but as construction started to wrap up I spent a lot of time syncing up all these flights and cutting them down into 1-2 minute videos. From there, Andrew Green crushed the narrations for us! It's not easy to succinctly describe all of the changes that happened in such a short amount of time, but he did a great job and really helped bring the final videos to life. We released the videos to our membership one hole at a time in our weekly Connections email starting in February and here we are a couple of months away from the grand re-opening! I learned so much about video production and golf course construction through this project and watching everything come to life has been such a joy!
Our 5th hole has undergone significant changes over the years. As part of our historic course restoration, it’s been dramatically restored to its original Donald Ross design. Check out the link below to hear course architect Andrew Green walk through each hole and witness the transformation as we approach the re-opening in the coming months! https://lnkd.in/gUBuDRWE
