Happy 4th of July. Blue-collar jobs are as American as apple pie, and it seems Gen Zers are taking a bite. Some Gen Zers are forgoing college and potential student debt to explore careers in trade jobs. According to the National Student Clearinghouse — a nonprofit that provides educational data and research — enrollments in vocational-focused community colleges were up 16% in 2023 compared to the year before, the highest level since its records began in 2018. As the cost of college continues to rise and student debt lingers, Gen Zers are rethinking their career paths. For many, trade jobs provide a financially secure alternative to a college degree. A recent by report by Clint DeBoer at Pro Tool Reviews, LLC highlights the top-paying trade jobs in the US. For Business Insider: https://lnkd.in/ebUunV4a

Amidst challenges, the Class of 2025 has ambitious career goals. While 61% of college seniors in a recent Handshake survey say they aspire to manage teams and nearly half (48%) say they want to reach executive roles and start businesses, 57% feel pessimistic about starting their careers due to today’s highly competitive job market. So the confidence gap is real. The need to strengthen proactive job search skills and resilience is crucial. There’s never been a more important time to invest in comprehensive career readiness programs like Exploring Your Potential. https://lnkd.in/gujmjyyW

Great interview by Opportunity@Work many employers have started shifting hiring practices and are looking for new ways to find talent, such as taking a “skills-first hiring approach”. Students need better information about the value of what they have learned in their classrooms and how to signal that learning in terms of skills for the employers.
I was on “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” ❗ Last night's episode examined the topic of student loan debt and as Oliver says, “so many careers are off limits to anyone who hasn't been to college.” They feature a clip of my interview with PBS NewsHour's Paul Solman explaining that because of unnecessary degree "requirements" a majority of today’s admin assistants can’t even apply for the jobs they’re doing today. That’s not a skills gap that’s an *opportunity* gap. Requiring a medical degree to treat patients or a civil engineering degree to design a bridge is common sense. By contrast, requiring a generic college degree to be considered for jobs such as administrative assistant, sales representative, digital marketer or data-center technician may be common, but it makes ZERO sense. Some say a bachelor’s degree signals cognitive skills, commitment and a capacity to learn. However, college is not the only way to learn, nor the only source of skills. Opportunity@Work's research shows there are 70+ million STARs who are skilled through alternative routes like military service, community college, partial college completion, workforce training programs, skills bootcamps, and more - who have the skills today for in-demand jobs. These three seemingly innocuous words — “bachelor’s degree required” — are causing serious damage to our workers and economy. Employers played a leading role in building it, but they can also lead in dismantling and replacing it. It's time to #HireSTARs and #TearthePaperCeiling!

As I apply for jobs, I notice that several companies ask for a master's degree in education. I don't know if this has been brought up or not, but most teachers will not have a masters in education. We just go for our bachelors unless we plan on going in to administration. As an educator, having a master's degree is a lot of work and the pay raise is maybe an additional $1200 a year. Not nearly significant enough to take out a $30,000 loan. Maybe look at an educator's years of experience and what they say about education before requiring a master's degree.
