🌟 Meet the Faces Behind Unity Lab! 🌟   Next up, we would like to introduce Fabio Neves da Rocha, member of Unity Lab / Urban Innovation Policy Lab. Here are three fun questions we asked Fabio to give you a glimpse into their work and interests. 1. What's your favourite thing about working here? That is a difficult question; there are so many things I like a lot. If I try to see them all as one piece, I will say it is our research environment. It starts with the lab's location in Edinburgh and its research tradition since the Enlightenment and extends to the multicultural and multidisciplinary characteristics of our team, not to mention the group work spirit. It is a fantastic environment! 2. What's the most exciting project you've been working on recently? Without a doubt, it is a project with the United Nations. We were selected to develop research on how digital technologies are being employed in urban cities, which will end up with an outlook on the benefits, barriers, and challenges cities around the world are experiencing. 3. What are your goals for this new year and in the long term? Let me tell you something a bit different, which is neither short-term nor long-term, but related to the previous questions: I want to increase my expertise in urban digital development. As you know, I am a practitioner turned academic, with a fair amount of experience in the IT industry with big tech companies, but less focused on topics primarily led by the public sector, such as urban innovation. This goal represents a significant expansion of my current knowledge and an exciting challenge for me. Thank you, Fabio Neves da Rocha, for taking part in this week’s questions. 🌟 Meet the Faces Behind Unity Lab! 🌟   Next up, we would like to introduce Dominik Beckers, member of Unity Lab / Urban Innovation Policy Lab and PhD student at FinEst Centre for Smart Cities (TalTech – Tallinn University of Technology). 🤗 Share a memorable team moment that made you proud to be part of #UnityLab Choosing from so many great moments is quite difficult, but our attendance at #WUF11 hosted by UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlements Programme) in #Katowice truly stands out. Not only for the privilege of presenting the first-of-its-kind global overview of smart city governance practices to an international audience, but also as one of the rare occasions for our research teams from #Edinburgh and #Tallinn to meet in person.   📚 What are you working on at the moment? I'm involved in a number of projects that I’m really excited about: I'm working on several papers focussed on #SmartCity units, their influence on smart city #governance, and the roles they fulfil, in addition to exploring #just and #equitable smart city transitions. Additionally, I'm collaborating on a #handbook designed for municipal smart city managers with various colleagues from #UnityLab.   🎯 What are your goals for this year and in the long-term? Most importantly, I’m aiming to complete my PhD by the end of the coming year. Following that … well, time will tell. I wouldn’t mind taking some time off and travelling through Central Asia, but who's to say what the future holds. Over the long-term, I hope that my #research contributes to a better understanding of governing smart city transitions among both scholars and practitioners, thereby improving living conditions for #citizens and helping find (some) answers to the impacts caused by the climate crisis.
