Last but not least, we welcome Deren Onursal to the ECC Blog and Web Resources team! 👏 Deren is a 5th-year Ph.D. candidate at the University of California, Riverside. His research interests include protest, social movements, state repression, democratic institutions, and quantitative methodology. He particularly investigates the effects of state tactics used during protest events on protesters' decisions to continue, and whether the relationship between state repression and protest continuation is mediated by emotions. We are grateful to each new member of the Early Career Committee for their expertise and look forward to their contributions. Thank you! Board, Leadership, and Compensation Effectiveness Consultant to Institutions of Higher Education and Not For Profits
GOT CHALLENGES? Most institutions of #highereducation do. The changes necessary are not easy. Leaders that make them happen are often subject to votes of no confidence. Boards that give in to these votes will find it impossible to find leaders that make the changes needed in the future. #gotcasagrande

After years of organizing and advocacy, community college faculty gained union rights, but the fight for four-year institutions continues. The article explores the power of collective action, detailing how unionization has empowered faculty, improved working conditions, and increased job satisfaction. Join me in reflecting on this journey and what lies ahead for higher education in Maryland. Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/emth5SqN

VMU Celebrates 35 Years of Liberal Arts Tradition in Lithuanian Higher Education. This milestone is crucial in shaping the philosophy of education. What are the global challenges democratic societies from West to East face today? Fear of not being re-elected and losing poll support creates a challenge to the concept of leadership. Democratic societies must connect to the essence of liberty and freedom in the 21st century. Liberal Arts education offers an opportunity to raise responsible generations, as it has historically excelled. Students start their careers in a creative environment where they must make decisions, often with a compromise or cost. This is a critical part of a democratic community—the ability to be responsible, sensitive, and proactive in decision-making. A question was posed by Vilma Žydžiūnaitė: What happens when young people have too many choices and opportunities to shape their careers? The main benefit of Liberal Arts education is that it trains everyone to take small steps in the decision-making process, shape their character, and learn to make mistakes in search of the right decision. It is not about the fear of failure but rather about the willingness to leave the comfort of a safe—and in this regard, limited—life. Only then can we progress. This is our mission at the Liberal Arts University: to help these young leaders emerge. #LiberalArts #Education #Responsibility #DecisionMaking #Progress #philosophy Photo by Jonas Petronis

One week from today, America will elect its next President. However, Inside Higher Ed reports #facultyandstaff are shying away from election-related conversations-just 30% of faculty say plan to discuss the election in their classrooms. Most of us learned how to disagree, and cite proper evidence while doing so, during our college experience. For many, it was those disagreements that sharpened our own beliefs. And Gallup research tells us that #collegegraduates who were exposed to diversity (in religion, race/ethnicity, political background, socioeconomic status) while in college are more likely to report their degree was #worththecost. Kudos to the faculty nationally who are leveraging this once-every-four-years moment to instruct/inspire their students.

"Critics of DEI programs in higher education, as well as corporate America, insist they are unfair and discriminatory." And my question is: unfair and discriminatory against who? Please read these articles with a grain of salt. In thriving for "objectivity," newspapers tend to downplay the importance of DEI initiatives given that the majority of employees in the U.S. want a more inclusive environment. Obviously, the policy is trash and we will see a substantial drop in college applications to Florida universities in the coming years based on this decision. #dei #florida https://lnkd.in/g5FVKByE
