Convenience store customers want it all: lower prices and convenient locations. But achieving both can be a challenge. 2023 #NACS State of the Industry Report revealed: 💲 Price Sensitivity is High: Over 50% of customers want lower in-store purchase prices. 📍 Location Matters: Nearly 76% of convenience store stops are for errands, commutes, or quick pickups, highlighting the importance of convenient locations. This creates a dilemma – should we prioritize lower prices or a prime location? 🤔 While lowering prices might seem like a quick fix, it can have drawbacks: ↘️ Shrinking Margins: Convenience stores operate on tighter margins than larger supermarkets. Significant price reductions can hurt profitability. 💵 Price Perception: Constant discounts can erode the perception of quality and value. Focusing on location can offer the following benefits - Capture More Customers - Premium Perception - Targeted Inventory Balancing these two strategic factors can be easier said than done. So, how do you bridge the gaps? By building value through #convenience and experience. Here's how to create value beyond price and location: 𝟭. C𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 "𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗰𝗸 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘂𝗹𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲" 𝗰𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗱: Nearly 18% of customers visit convenience stores for treats. Showcase attractive displays and promotions for snacks, desserts, and other impulse buys near the checkout. 🚧 Caution: Don’t overdo it and clutter up your front counters. 𝟮. E𝗺𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗺𝗶𝗰𝗿𝗼-𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗽𝗮𝘆𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀: Implement mobile ordering and contactless payment options for a faster and more convenient experience. 𝟯. L𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: Use digital signage and in-store geo-fencing to deliver personalized offers and enhance the customer journey 𝟰. F𝗼𝗰𝘂𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝗰𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗿 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲: Offer extended hours, dedicate staff for quick service, create a clean and inviting environment, and consider delivery partnerships to cater to busy lifestyles. Offering value beyond price or location is key to long-term success. Catering to specific customer needs helps you create a more differentiated and competitive brand. What would you choose? It is time for us to redefine convenience in mobility retail. Convenience in retail has traditionally been about quick transactions, easy access, and reducing customer effort. While these pillars remain vital, post-COVID changes have transformed how we define convenience today. Day parts have evolved drastically, and the geographic context of convenience has expanded with remote work and changing lifestyle patterns. Morning commutes are no longer as predictable, and lunch breaks might mean a stroll to the kitchen rather than a café, adding new dimensions to what customers consider "convenient." Retailers must adapt to this shift by embracing context. Customers now demand personalized and adaptable services that align with their immediate circumstances, whether it's fast access to fuel and breakfast items during a commute or finding private-label foods and niche products closer to home. So, as geographic contexts and schedules redefine the concept of convenience, how should retailers rethink their strategies to build loyalty amid these new expectations? How can convenience become a greater driver of customer engagement in this dynamic retail environment? #convenienceretail #mobilityretail #fuelretail #customerexperience #context #frictionright #cstores
