Last week, the inTouch team had the privilege of presenting at Workshop UNITE, organised by our valued partners at IndianCare Inc, held at the Koorie Heritage Trust in Federation Square. Our session focused on visa abuse and supporting women on temporary visas, providing crucial information for practitioners working to protect and empower vulnerable women in our communities. We were delighted to engage with a number of attendees from different professions, including case workers, program managers, city council representatives, and members of VicPol. The insightful discussions and positive feedback underscore the importance of collaborative efforts in addressing complex issues affecting migrant and refugee women. We look forward to continuing this impactful work alongside our incredible partners. The 2010s: Expanding support for young people. This decade saw CMY expand its reach regionally to Gippsland and develop new approaches to support newly arrived young people. The 2010s saw the development of projects like Shout Out, @lemana_cmy and Employment Pathways (now known as Employment Empowers). 2013 saw the embedding of a new vision: "Young people from migrant and refugee backgrounds are connected, empowered and influential Australians," a vision we still stand by today 20 years later. Importantly, CMY's first Youth Advocacy Group or (YAG) was established in 2010 by 10 young people from migrant or refugee backgrounds. The YAG, still a core component of CMY’s organisational structure to this day, recognises youth as the experts on issues that impact them. YAGs members throughout the years have used their voices to consult CMY on decision-making processes of CMY management and the Board. Find out more about the history of CMY's YAG and more about what shaped the 2010s here: www.history.cmy.net.au [Image Description: 5 people of varying backgrounds are standing in front of a leafy wall. Excited to share Upwardly Global’s 2023 policy accomplishments to advance workforce equity and inclusion for refugees, asylees, and other immigrants restarting their careers in the U.S.! We advocated for passage of bipartisan bills supporting Afghan refugees' rights as part of a cross-sector coalition, helped inform federal guidelines for immigrants' economic inclusion through a number of key initiatives, fought for parental leave for immigrant women, and more. Plus, we’re proud to have helped craft and spearhead groundbreaking legislation in Illinois to remove the relicensing barriers that keep internationally trained healthcare professionals from being able to practice their professions. This achievement is perhaps the most significant of the year. The legislation, which was signed into law by Governor Pritzker, will serve as a model for other states and federal agencies. It is helping build momentum to bring about change on a broader scale. Immigrants serve in critical jobs that strengthen our communities and save us. This year, we will continue working to create change that helps open doors and expand opportunities available to immigrants, refugees, and asylees. We look forward to continuing many of these efforts in collaboration with our partners and other allies in the fight to lift immigrant talent. Let’s keep pushing boundaries together! https://lnkd.in/eEHFXYEn

EMPOWERING MIGRANT INCLUSION. PROFESSIONAL SKILLS AND TOOLS Editors: Roberta Teresa Di Rosa, Giuseppina Tumminelli Authors: Rita Bichi, Gabriella Argento, Roberta T. Di Rosa, Giuseppina Tumminelli, Nicoletta Paversi, Elena Allegri, Tiziana Tarsia Forewords: Shulamit Ramon This book explores key issues on the relational and operational dimension of the professional actions aimed at ensuring the well-being and inclusion of migrants in the reception system. Starting from the assumption that well-being is a multi-level phenomenon related to different and complex questions, the chapter authors articulated their reflections developing some thematic contents, complementary to one another, from the perspectives of different social actors involved in the inclusion process. A special attention is paid to the risk factors as potential obstacles to the inclusion, not only in the achievement of well-being but also in the relationship with the receiving society and with the reception system. Case studies will be presented to show how this complexity is explored integrating different theoretical perspectives with the participation of all social actors involved in inclusion pathways (unaccompanied migrant minors, immigrant families, refugees, social operators, voluntary guardians). The authors share the social responsibility in investing in human and professional resources in the reception system and in connecting it with the local community. Updating the social workers’ tools and methods become more and more relevant to enable the diffusion of new skills, functions, and roles in the management of reception of migrant minors and adults. https://lnkd.in/dz4N6wCR

ICYMI, #Canadian LIF especially, #Canadians overall, please check out, share, get involved -- and show up!: Migrants' Rights Network's "'Take to the Streets: Say No To Racism! Yes to Immigrant Justice!' September 14, 2024, September 15, 2024, Across the country' 'Right-wing politicians are scapegoating immigrants for the housing and affordability crisis, diverting attention from corporate greed and government policy failures. All workers, including migrants and immigrants, are suffering from decades of cuts to healthcare, housing, education, and social services. The elite want us divided—citizen against newcomer—so we don’t unite against billionaires, landlords, and climate criminals profiting from our crisis. The federal Liberals are mirroring Conservative tactics, shutting down immigration avenues. Regularization—permanent resident status for undocumented people—was promised in December 2021 but still has not been delivered, while migrants remain underpaid, exploited, and excluded. We must act now to halt the tide of xenophobia before it entrenches further, as it has in the United States and Europe. Those of us who believe in fairness and justice must flood the streets in the thousands, rejecting immigrant scapegoating and distraction. Organize or join an action on September 14 & 15, 2024!
