Today is September 8, 2024. Today is the 8th day of September, National Suicide Prevention Month. Today is the also first National 988 Day, an initiative dedicated to spreading awareness about the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. As a crisis counselor at Samaritans Southcoast, one of over two hundred 988 Helplines in the United States, this day means a lot to me. In the United States, somebody will die by suicide every 11 minutes. Statistics from 2022 show suicide to be the third-leading cause of death among 15- to 29-year-olds. More than 1.6 million people attempt suicide every year, with millions more either planning or seriously thinking about dying by suicide. Confidential 988 services are also available everywhere in the United States for free, 24/7, 365. Calling or texting 988 or chatting via 988lifeline.org can make a huge difference. Trained crisis counselors offer support for mental health, substance use, and so much more. Reach out to your loved ones and check in on them. It can be hard to talk about mental health, substance use, self-harm, and suicide due to the stigmas surrounding these issues. Opening a dialogue and showing you care can make the biggest difference.
