About 50% of energy consumption in big universities comes from laboratories! Why? It is not what you would expect…   Our high-tech equipment consumes significant amounts of electricity.   Over the past decades the number of and use of various machines has continuously increased.   But here comes the first surprise: Modeling molecular interactions and genetic analyses can easily cause footprints of 1-20 kg of CO2e!   In some cases, it has been shown that larger phylogenetic analyses can release up to 4000 kg of CO2e.   These footprints are not always captured by the universities as they use external servers. Nevertheless, the internal software calculations are becoming more elaborate too. For example, consider compensation in flow cytometry or image processing of 3D microscopy.   Second surprise: HVAC consumes 50% of all energy needed!   Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) is an important factor in laboratories because of the toxic chemicals that we handle.   This means that air needs to be exchanged at high rates.   As a consequence, all air coming from the outside has to be heated up or cooled down and then expelled to the outside after a relatively short period of time.   Moving and heating/cooling the air requires significant amounts of energy. The issue worsens in older buildings where these systems cannot be regulated.   They are either on or off. That means they run at full power, in many cases 24/7.   What you can do: A) turn off or use stand-by modes (especially for hoods, sterilizers and heating blocks/baths) B) opt for equipment with less energy consumption (use ACT-label and Energy Star certification) C) connect to your building administration and HVAC personal   As always, you can join us, for example, at our annual summit to learn more about these topics. Increasing sustainability in the lab can seem like a tricky procedure. After all, it is important not to reduce productivity and to keep operating expenses down. However, there are many ways to reduce your laboratory's environmental footprint while maintaining productivity and even reducing costs. Let's talk about it!! 1.) Resource & Energy Management - Turning off instrumentation and water sources during downtimes can be an effective way to increase sustainability while reducing operating costs. To avoid a productivity loss attributed to instrument start-up and equilibration, you can set automatic timers to turn instrumentation on prior to testing hours. 2.) Recyling, Reuse, and Waste Minimization/Segregation - Recyling solvents, reagents, and consumables is a great way to reduce the need for new materials in the lab as well as reducing spend in this category. You can also reduce waste disposal costs by properly segregating lab waste. 3.) Digitization - Moving towards digital data management is a fantastic way to reduce paper usage and energy costs (I see you with that giant stack of chromatograms on your desk!!!). Moving away from physical reference standards towards digital reference libraries when possible is also a great way to reduce costs and lab waste. 4.) Remote Testing - Implementing remote testing options in the lab as well as equipping staff with data analysis software on their personal computers can be a way to reduce the environmental impact of transportation by allowing bench scientists to work from home. These are just a few ways to reduce your lab's impact. Creativity, commitment, and continuous monitoring on your lab's environmental impact are key to reaching your sustainability goals!!
