I came across a controversial article titled, "I had to beg to go into the office": is the grad scheme dead? The article highlights some concerning experiences some graduates have had and what some employers are expecting from them. However, from my experience, this article is far from the truth. The clients I work with invest significant time and money, provide support and development to the graduates we place with them. I'm interested to hear about your experiences on your graduate schemes. Share your thoughts in the comments below. #graduates #graduateschemes #article Check out the article here: https://lnkd.in/e8-rYBR8

From Exams to Placements: The Unseen Stress Freshly Qualified Professionals Face Becoming a Chartered Accountant is no small feat. Endless nights of study, the pressure of rigorous exams, and years of unwavering commitment—it’s a journey that tests every ounce of resilience. But what many don’t realize is that the journey doesn’t end with the qualification; it simply transforms. The placement drive is the next big hurdle, and for many freshly qualified CAs, this phase can feel just as intense as exam prep. • The Fire of Expectations: After qualifying, there’s immense pressure to secure a prestigious position that matches years of hard work. The expectations—from family, peers, and even ourselves—can weigh heavy. • The Harsh Realities of Competition: In placement drives, every candidate brings their A-game. The competition is fierce, and opportunities don’t always align with aspirations. • The Emotional Toll: Rejection letters, long waits, and uncertainty chip away at confidence, much like an unanswered question in a tough exam paper. This experience isn’t unique to CAs. Fresh graduates from various fields—engineers, MBAs, doctors—can relate to the post-qualification stress during placement drives. The shared challenges include: • Striving to balance preparation with self-care. • Facing repeated rejections and keeping motivation alive. • Navigating the uncertainty of a future that feels out of your control. The placement process is a transition, a test of grit that shapes not just your career but also your character. To anyone in this phase: • Remember, every rejection is redirection. • Lean on your peers and mentors for guidance. • Take pride in the journey—you’ve already proven your resilience! To the hiring organizations, let’s recognize the incredible potential and determination of these fresh candidates. Investing in them is investing in the future. Let’s make the transition from exams to placements less daunting for the next wave of professionals. What’s your take? How can we make the process more supportive for fresh talent? #CharteredAccountant #PlacementSeason #CareerGrowth #FreshGraduates

Long back, when I was sitting in the campus placements! I used to really dread one part - Group Discussions.. I would have attended more than 25 GDs in my summers and finals. Some before getting into the MBA as well! And broadly came to the conclusion that GDs are largely lotteries. Most of the times - Companies use it in the process because they do not have a way to shortlisting from a large list of applications. Imagine you ask for resumes, and get 100s of similar looking resumes. Top B-school, everyone has done wonders in graduation, some position of responsibility, similar projects. How does the hiring manager shortlist? Some resumes are obvious shortlists, while few are clear rejects. For everyone else, you conduct a GD. The onus is now on students to get selected. Then the whole challenge of how does one participate in a GD. In one GD, I was sitting quietly, and the person shouting the most got selected. In another, I was vocal, and the person quietest got selected :) So if you are sitting in GDs and not going through the next round, do not take the GD results to heart. They do not necessarily reflect how good or bad you are. Of course you should prepare. But you can only control your effort. The outcome is not in your hands. ----- Peeyush Chitlangia, CFA I help students and professionals enhance their career in #finance Do reach out if you are looking to upskill yourself!

🌞Good morning LinkedIn! Hope the week is off to a good start. 🌟Follow-Up: Structuring Employability Skills for Aspiring Accountants 🌟 In my last post, I explored insights from “Skills and Attributes Needed for Success in Accounting Careers” by Mohamed Faker Klibi and Ahmed Atef Oussii focusing on the gap between students’ perceptions and employers’ expectations. Today, I’m building on that discussion with insights from another compelling study: “A Note on Structuring Employability Skills” by Jon Warwick and Anna Howard . 🔑 Key Insight: Balancing Technical and Employability Skills While technical expertise is fundamental, Warwick and Howard highlight the increasing importance of employability skills in easing the transition from education to the workplace. These include: •Communication & Interpersonal Skills: Crucial for effective collaboration and leadership. •Problem-Solving & Analytical Thinking: Vital for addressing real-world challenges. •Self-Management & Adaptability: Essential for thriving in dynamic environments. 📚 Connecting the Dots If Klibi and Oussii’s work highlighted the gap, Warwick and Howard provide a roadmap for addressing it. They emphasize the need for targeted curriculum design that integrates employability skills alongside technical knowledge. This structured approach helps ensure graduates are workplace-ready, meeting both personal career goals and industry demands. 💼 Next Steps for Students To build these skills, students should actively: •Seek internships and practical experiences. •Engage in networking to understand industry expectations. •Participate in workshops or extracurriculars that foster communication and teamwork. Fellow students and professionals, what employability skills have been most valuable in your journey, or what strategies have worked for you in preparing for the professional world? Let’s keep this important conversation going! #Accounting #EmployabilitySkills #CareerTransition #EducationToEmployment #SkillsForSuccess

Excellent gradireland Breakfast News event today on the topic of graduate recruitment under the title "Have we lost it (and them)? Early Career strategist Sinéad D'Arcy pointed out that it's no wonder GenZs are confused about work: aren't we all with the pace of change and advance of AI. She advises leveraging graduates entrepreneurial traits, so they become intrapreneurial, adding: "organisations are being challenged as the expectations of grads have changed – there is space for innovation and change in the process and for looking at what can we do differently. Sinead was in conversation with Brian O'Mahony of Roffey Park Institute. Kevin Hannigan of HPC focused on grad programmes with An Post's Gareth McLouglin and Applegreen's Katie Dunne where the emphasis is on experiences with the employer throughout the recruitment process, pacing development, providing mentorship and job shadowing opportunities as part of their graduate programmes. Nicky Garcea of Cappfinity shared that 78% of job seekers had ghosted an employer and spoke about the importance of psychological safety for candidates and new grad employees. She recommends that employers focus on these 3 aspects in designing effective graduate programmes: Remove Barriers, Clarity & Transparency and Provide Authentic Moments. Lastly Gavan O'Brien of @GradIreland spoke on how to reduce costly drop outs from grad programmes and highlighted the new GradSims developed over the past year that gives candidates insights into what a company and a job is really like before making an application. 🎓 To all the newly qualified Chartered Accountants preparing for campus placements next week: Remember, finding the right job is more important than finding the quickest one. It's natural to feel a bit anxious when we see our peers securing positions but keep in mind—this isn’t a race to see who can get there first. Your first job will likely set the tone for your career, and it should be one that aligns with your values and aspirations. I've seen professionals turn down multiple offers in pursuit of the ideal fit. Their patience and diligence paid off, leading them to roles where they’ve found both success and satisfaction. So, to all the fresh Chartered Accountants, I wish you the best of luck. May you find your dream job and be successful professionals. A big reminder to accountants scrolling LinkedIn today The most impactful thing you can do for the accounting community is to show the fun side of accounting to the younger generation around you and attract them towards the profession. Baby boomers are approaching retirement Fewer young people are choosing accounting as a career. The talent gap is widening. While offshoring and automation might hold the fort for a while, the future needs skilled accountants right at home. During a recent webinar on "Winning the War for Talent" hosted by Accounting Today, experts Kristin Murray and Elizabeth Krisher (Betsy) emphasized the importance of drawing more people into the profession. They suggested that providing mentorship and sharing personal work experiences can inspire new entrants. This advice is incredibly relevant given the current state of the accounting industry. And I have seen the first hand. My husband and I are both Chartered Accountants and our eldest aspires to be one too. He is too young but that’s the influence we have on young minds around us. So, how can you help in growing the talent pool? → Participate in high school career fair → Share the fun and exciting aspects of accounting profession → Be open to mentoring the youth, helping them understand the intricacies of accounting as a career → Highlight the diverse fields within accounting, beyond just tax and audit → Show how accountants make a real-world impact on businesses and the economy → Create engaging content that showcases the realities of the accounting profession Inspire a new generation to discover the rewarding world of accounting!
