🚀 Exciting news from the U.S. Marine Corps! 🇺🇸 They're stepping up their air defense game with the adoption of the new interceptor system featuring SpyHunter missiles. According to Inside Defense, the Marine Corps plans to increase spending on air defense systems in fiscal year 2025, allocating $111 million for the Medium Range Intercept Capability (MRIC) program. The MRIC, equipped with SkyHunter missiles, represents a significant advancement in the Marine Corps' air defense capabilities. With a range of 4 to 70 kilometers (2.4 to 43.4 miles), the SkyHunter surpasses previous systems like the Stinger missile, enabling the Marine Corps to protect a larger ground area, especially in situations where traditional air defense assets may be limited. An essential component of the MRIC is its integration with the AN/TPS-80 Ground/Air Task Oriented Radar (G/ATOR), a vital part of the Marine Corps' surveillance and targeting network. This integration enhances the Marine Corps' ability to detect, track, and engage airborne threats effectively. Each MRIC launcher is designed to hold 20 SkyHunter missiles, similar to Israel's Iron Dome defense system, ensuring robust protection against aerial threats. 🎯 #USMC #AirDefense #SpyHunterMissiles #MilitaryTechnology

“the Department is currently engaged in the development of a future capability called the Glide Phase Interceptor, or GPI, will be a sea-based capability designed to engage offensive threats in the ‘glide’ portion of a hypersonic flight trajectory--or between the midcourse and terminal phases. GPI will supplement the Sea-Based Terminal defense capability to provide a maritime layered defense against regional hypersonic threats.” - John Plumb, Assistant Secretary of Defense for Space Policy General Radar is poised to offer a level of missile defense to the United States' homeland that surpasses current systems. By providing cost-effective radars, General Radar could be instrumental in deploying a comprehensive defense network around North America. This would equip NORAD with the necessary sensors to detect, identify, track, and engage various airborne threats efficiently. “…we have come a long way in the last 15 years on missile defense policy. The threat is dynamic, and our approach must evolve with it. If you have one single takeaway from my speech this morning, let it be this: Integrated air and missile defense is here to stay. It is an essential part of 21st-century deterrence and 21st-century warfare. We need to make IAMD more cost-efficient, and we need to do it at scale. But it has never been more critical, and there is no time to waste.” - John Plumb, Assistant Secretary of Defense for Space Policy Our cost-effective unclassified systems can be scaled up, extending detection ranges and reaction times, effectively neutralizing threats before they pose a risk. These unclassified, unattended systems can be deployed in dispersed locations, maximizing coverage with minimal security requirements akin to cell phone towers or air traffic control radars. This streamlined security approach eliminates the need for troop guards, significantly reducing the overall costs of owning and operating General Radar systems. Join us in exploring how our cutting-edge radar technology is reshaping defense capabilities. Despite requesting only a slight increase in funding compared to the previous year, the allocation emphasizes investments in missiles and multiple launch rocket systems, aligning with recent usage in conflicts such as Ukraine. This shift towards strengthening munitions capabilities reflects the evolving threat landscape and the Army's efforts to prioritize readiness and modernization. With a budget of $185.9 billion, the Army aims to sustain a force structure comprising 442,300 active duty soldiers, 325,000 Army National Guard members, and 175,800 reservists. Notably, the increase in funding for missiles, including the Long Range Hypersonic Weapon system, Precision Strike Missiles, and Javelin anti-tank missiles, underscores the importance placed on enhancing the Army's firepower and precision capabilities. Additionally, the significant allocation of $1.2 billion for guided multiple launch rocket systems indicates a substantial investment in expanding munitions capabilities. Overall, the Army's budget request reflects a strategic alignment with potential future conflicts and underscores its commitment to maintaining a modern, well-equipped force capable of addressing evolving threats effectively. The emphasis on munitions investments highlights the Army's proactive approach to readiness and underscores the importance of staying ahead in an increasingly complex and competitive global security environment. Israel has been fortunate that its enemies have demonstrated a lack of creativity and synchronization in their attacks. In April, the previous airstrikes resembled a scattershot approach, with over 300 attacks involving cruise missiles, rockets, and slow-moving drones being launched at Israel. Despite this intense barrage, Israel, with the support of US and NATO forces, successfully intercepted and neutralized 99% of these threats. Looking forward, there’s a looming question: If Iran decides to attack, will they adopt a more phased and coordinated strategy? It’s possible that Iran could have its proxies target US ships, which are currently providing integrated support to Israel’s air defense system. This would force those ships to focus on their own defense, potentially weakening the overall air defense network. Complicating the situation further is the USS Abraham Lincoln carrier group, which is en route to the region. For now, its presence serves as a deterrent, but it won’t arrive for several weeks. This delay leaves a window of vulnerability. If Israel’s adversaries manage to coordinate their efforts and launch simultaneous attacks, the potential for significant damage increases dramatically. This scenario underscores the importance of maintaining vigilance and readiness to respond to a more sophisticated and unified threat. From my discussion with Jim Acosta on CNN.

CNN reported that USS Gravely used Phalanx CIWS to shoot a Houthi missile that came within a mile of the ship. After reading this article, a few questions came to my mind; - How could the missile pass through the outer layers of the air defense system? - Did the crew detect the missile? Or did the Phalanx engage in standalone mode? - Was there a malfunction in the air defense system? Some people say that this is a cheaper method of defense against air threats. I can say with all my experience that there is not a commander in any navy who thinks of the cost when the air search radar detects an incoming missile. If you compare the cost of launching an expensive missile to shoot down a drone that only costs a few thousand dollars, you have to consider that this missile is no more expensive than a billion-dollar destroyer. And the reputation you have lost after the drone or the Hotuhi missiles hit is priceless. https://lnkd.in/dd3f9UcX
