The research emphasizes that the proximity to the surgical port significantly affects the complexity of maneuvers. 🧠🔬 Key findings: Right-side and proximal-end access posed the most challenge, especially for less experienced surgeons. The complexity of tasks increased significantly near the forceps insertion port, indicating a steeper learning curve in these areas. 💡 Surgeons, particularly those in training, should note these findings for more targeted practice and skill development. The predicted shortage of cardiothoracic surgeons by mid-century has been overcome by training more cardiothoracic surgeons as well as a reduction in cardiothoracic surgeon attrition. Future increasing demand can be met by filling our available training positions. Continual assessment of cardiothoracic surgeon supply and demand will help achieve the optimal number of cardiothoracic surgery training positions

Just in time for the end of a successful year, our latest publication in #endoscopicspinesurgery using #artificialintelligence techniques is online: "Artificial intelligence-based analysis of associations between learning curve and clinical outcomes in endoscopic and microsurgical lumbar decompression surgery" A median of 72 cases of FED surgeries led to comparable clinical outcomes in the early learning curve phase compared to experienced surgeons. These outcomes seem to be more significantly affected by patient characteristics than the learning curve or the surgical technique. Several study variables, including the learning curve, can be used to predict whether lumbar decompression surgery will result in an increased LOS, OT, or complications. We are happy that our work has been accepted for publication by the European Spine Journal.
