This anatomical model, printed from multiple material hardnesses, helps replicate the geometry of the larynx to demonstrate the epiglottis' function as it relates to a product design. In this 3D print, the thyrohyoid membrane is only .015 in. thick and must be cleaned by hand using a soft bristle toothbrush. The larynx sub-assembly will be combined with the printed anatomy of the esophagus, trachea, sphincter, and stomach, then connected to a test head (printed using data obtained from a CT scan of a 28-week neonate). This allows us to deliver continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) to a test lung while our product is 'implanted' into the system. Building this representation of human anatomy allows us to observe the general function of our device for a benchtop characterization study, which is paramount to the development and successful delivery of medical devices for clinical trials or commercialization. 🎉 I'm excited to announce that our haptics project, "Advancing Hand Rehabilitation: A Novel 3D-Printed Soft Pneumatic Glove for Enhanced Mixed Reality Interaction," has been accepted last month as a work-in-progress paper at the IEEE Haptics Symposium 2024 in Long Beach, CA! Initiated in the haptics class hold by Jeremy D. Brown, PhD, our team—comprising engineers Qihang Li, 狄凌昀, Yaqian Chen, Wenpeng Wang, and myself—has transformed an ambitious idea into an impressive haptics prototype. Our current model is a lightweight glove (78g) capable of bending to 120 degrees under 200kPa pressure. It integrates smoothly with a 3D Mixed-Reality scenario designed specifically for hand rehabilitation exercises. This tool addresses the critical need for accessible and effective rehabilitation aids for patients with neurological or musculoskeletal impairments. Despite a setback due to visa issues that prevented us from attending an earlier symposium in the Netherlands, our dedication never wavered. Over the semesters, my teammates and I added features to our prototype, driven by our passion and diverse expertise in areas such as computer vision, AR/MR interaction, and soft 3D printing technology. 🌟 Presenting our team's work at the IEEE Haptics Symposium 2024 represents not only a professional milestone but also a personal highlight.
