The UCBL pediatric orthotic is a type of custom foot orthotic device that is used to treat a range of pediatric foot and ankle conditions. The device was developed at the University of California, Berkeley, in 1967 hence the name "UCBL". This type of orthotic device is most commonly used to treat conditions such as flatfoot, in-toeing and out-toeing, and excessive pronation. The UCBL orthotic is typically used for children between the ages of 3 and 12. Usually medial angulation of both lower limb bones (fibula and tibia) is involved symptoms of bow legs: The main sign of bowed legs is the appearance of your child’s legs. Their knees won’t touch when they stand with their feet and ankles together. The bowing is most obvious when they’re walking. Sometimes children may walk with their toes pointed inward (pigeon toes or intoeing). However, bow legs usually don’t cause any pain. Bow legs don’t affect your child’s ability to crawl, walk or run. If your child’s bow legs don’t start to improve by age 2, contact your child’s healthcare provider. How bow legs diagnosed: Your child’s healthcare provider will do a physical exam and ask about your child’s medical history. But if your child is under 2 years old, your child’s healthcare provider probably won’t do any further tests. Rather, they’ll want to watch the bowing and make sure it resolves on its own as your child grows. If your child is older than 2, your child’s healthcare provider may measure your child’s legs and watch him or her walk. They may order imaging tests such as X-rays to view the bones in your child’s legs and knees. They may order blood tests to determine whether the bow legs are being caused by a condition such rickets. Your child’s healthcare provider may refer your child to a doctor who specializes in bones (orthopaedic specialist).

🦶❗ A sprained ankle - more serious than you think? More than one million people present at A&E with ankle sprains every year. But if that sounds like an awful lot of twists and falls, be warned; it’s just a fraction of the numbers who simply hobble on, without checking in. So, says renowned foot and ankle orthopaedic surgeon, Mr Andy Goldberg OBE. As Mr Goldberg points out, at some point in our lives, many of us will suffer the pain and indignity of an ankle sprain. And winter is a prime season for slippery surfaces. So, whether it’s from sliding on an icy pavement, rolling over on a wet football pitch, or tumbling off your high heels on New Year’s Eve, the opportunities for ankle injury are everywhere at this time of year. In his clinics at The Wellington Hospital in St John’s Wood, Elstree Outpatients in Hertfordshire, and HCA UK at The Shard in London Bridge, all part of HCA UK, Mr Goldberg has seen all these injuries and more, from everyone from teenagers to professional athletes, and even grandmothers. And what’s most important, he says, is not to brush it off and try to get back on your feet too quickly.
