🎉Congratulations to resrearchers Sanne Schagen, Karin de Visser, leila akkari and Ton Schumacher of the Netherlands Cancer Institute on being selected for the final stages of Cancer Grand Challenges as part of teams RESCuE (Schagen), OPTIMAL (de Visser, Akkari) and MATCHMAKERS (Schumacher). These interdisciplinary, global teams are now in with a chance of receiving up to $25m to make radical progress against some of cancer’s toughest challenges. If successful, Schagen, as part of her team, would seek to tackle the challenge to understand and prevent chemotherapy-induced neurotoxicity and neuropathy (RESCuE). De Visser and Akkari will focus on understanding cancer cell plasticity and its contribution to the development of pan-therapeutic resistance (OPTIMAL). Schumacher and his team want to decipher the T-cell receptor cancer-recognition code (MATCHMAKERS). Funded teams will be announced in March 2024. Collaboration between community #oncologists and academic medicine is more vital now than ever, according to The Wall Street Journal op-ed which focuses on the results of a study led by Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center’s Mikkael Sekeres with the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute and the National Cancer Institute. The study compares community versus central pathologist’s case reviews for the same cohort of patients. It reveals a stark difference in diagnosis for 1 in 5 patients. This echoes our own data. In fact, AccessHope subspecialists recommend proposed changes to #cancercare plans 97% of the time.
